[#370608]

I have just been flicking around the net and come across a You Tube video filmed in December of the descent through Hagg Side Wood towards Ladybower. The track had turned into the Somme (minus the bullets).

Anyone know the current state of the track? I am due to ride in a fortnight

Thanks

I wouldn't worry, the rocky descent further up derwent past the outdoor centre (top of Hagg farm ascent) is better anyway.

There is a group of us going and the Hagg Side descent is part of a planned route. I need to know whether its ridable or not as I will have to find an alternative route

well it's closed officially (was last weekend) but if you go a bit further along the ridge you will get to the descent I was describing, this would not mess up your route too much.

Benjag

Thanks for that. I think we are going down the track you suggested and back up the closed one. If its still closed I will sort out a diversion. We could go further down the side of Ladybower and up the bridleway by Crookhill Farm

pieface, that takes them down the wrong side!

biggins, the crookhill farm ascent is ++steep! go with it, the rocky descent is worth the steep climb even if you have to hack a couple of miles on the road. PS pie and peas at the derwent caff is a must!

Biggins, i rode up the bridleway from the War memorial last sunday (well, not all of it, bit rocky/steep in places!)it has re-opened and has been resurfaced with rock/shale and is in good condition. Half of the Car park was re-opened with a few construction vehicles parked in the other half.

When I said Rowlee I meant the other descent further up the hill that takes you dowm to Howden(?) reservoir.

Basically go further North / north west and follow the bridleway down to the reservoir, loads better. Its not one to go up, despite what MBR says unless you're uber fit

thats the same descent I was describing, bugger going up it, a real waste!
Also on another point when was the rocky descent from hope cross called 'the beast'?? I've been riding in the peaks for 20 odd years and never heard it called that until last weekend buy some mates of mates?

I had the same thought when I saw "The Beast" quoted on various web sites. I had to go and find what bit of trail they were on about. A bit like the Beast in Thetford, when I was riding weekly there in 94/95 it was just known as "the uppy downy bit"

The Beast is the climb from Bamford / Hathersage on the way home to Sheffield
