Just been informed by my LBS that my GX derailleur needs to be replaced. It is 12 speed and just over 3 1/2 years old.
Question is whether I should replace with another GX or is it worthwhile going for the X01? Would that last any longer?
I’ve heard the X01 have better quality materials and last longer. Although if your old mech is knackered because it’s had lots of impacts off rocks then I’d probably go gx again as a bit of me would die inside everytime I clunked something that expensive off trail features.
What's knackered with it? If it's just the jockey wheels you can replace them easily enough.
XT 12 speed, it works fine with the sram bits, I think it actually shifts better. The clutch actually works and stays working, the sram ones fail in 6 months if you are lucky, or sooner. XT also sticks out less.
I downgraded from a (smashed) XO1 derailleur that was 5 years old, to a GX. Unfortunately, the XO1 derailleurs aftermarket are eye-wateringly expensive. The GX lasted about 4 months before the jockey wheel seized completely (unrideable). Fortunately I'd kept the jockey wheels from the XO1.
Make of that what you will. My impression is that XO1 stuff is genuinely good quality but expensive, whereas GX is still pretty expensive and unimpressive. If XT will work that's probably a better option IMO although I doubt a shop will want to fit that for you!
If I got 3 1/2 years out of a mech, I'd be buying the same one again

Riding mates are all swapping over to XT mech after their sram ones give up the ghost. No issues at all.
I'm running GX and MrsP has XT. If/when mine dies I'll stick an XT on it.
interesting the XT/XTR mech works with a SRAM shifter!!
Anyone here got similar test results?
DrP
I dont think its fair to wright off a gx derailleur on its jockey wheels. Yes mine siezed solid too but after a little grease they are great.
And you can pop in new bearings for a few quid

Yep, been doing it since Shimano 12spd stuff came out. I really dislike Shimano shifters, so running the sram one is an added bonus for me. Full sram drivetrain apart from my rear mech.
My eeb has an SLX as I wrote off the X01 mech in a crash & it’s all I could get locally, there and then but other bike has an XTR with everything else X01.
Thanks for the replies.
Interested in the suggestions about the XT. Is it a more durable option?
In terms of what is wrong with the current derailleur I am not sure. Pretty confident it is not the jockey wheels as they are running free. It is struggling to get into and out of the big cog. LBS checked the hanger and also installed. new cable too.
Spring tension weak
Bent cage
Worn pivots
B tension not adjusted correctly, use the supplied guide!
Shimano mech is way more durable, the xtr one I have is still running perfect after 6 months, if it was x01 it would be going back to sram for warranty on a faulty clutch (had 3 on warranty for that issue !)
himano mech is way more durable, the xtr one I have is still running perfect after 6 months
To be fair the op’s mech is 3.5 years old so even if it has failed with spring tension / clutch etc that’s not a hugely short life.
If you got 3.5yrs from a gx mech, I don't see any real need for you to try anything else.
I have however bust a few, in quick succession, X01 is suppose to be stronger/more durable, but they are SOOO expensive, so I was just replacing with GX.
I recently fitted an XT mech, similar price to GX, hopefully more durable, time will tell.
My set up is;
XX1 crank (superstar chain ring)
XX1 shifter
GX chain
GX cassette
XT mech
Works well. certainly not noticeably worse than it was with GX mech even when new
That being said, my cassette is getting a bit worn now, and I have ordered an XT cassette/chain (and microspline free hub) to give that a go.
Yep, XT shifter and mech is my plan for when the SRAM stuff wears out/breaks on mine. I don’t mind paying high prices for stuff that works, and TBF the SRAM stuff is lasting well so far, but the prices for XO stuff is just eye watering, and any lower spec than that seems not to last.
