Gravel tyres for Ho...

[Closed] Gravel tyres for Hope 20Five rims (WTB Nano's apparently won't fit for me)

Evening all,

Having just knackered 2 tubes and wasted an entire evening trying to fit some 40c WTB Nano's onto some Hope 20Five rims, I'm looking for some gravel tyre recommendations that people know to work on these rims.

I'd love to try the WTB Resolute as an alternative but I'm wary of having the exact same thing happen again with both tyres being WTB, maybe there's just an incompatibility between the two brands, who knows.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

c.

PS Yes, I'm not running tubeless yet, I'm not really getting out on the bike enough at present to justify making the switch and figuring out all of the things I don't know that I don't know about it yet!

No help whatsoever but I also knackered two tubes last night trying to get nano 40c TCS on some hunt rims. My thumbs feel your pain and The Nanos are now for sale!

Bookmarking this so I know what to buy.

again, no help from me either.... but....

i found putting nano's on my rims was the easiest tubeless setup i've ever done... like, shockingly easy... that was on WTB rims though....

and getting any tubeless tyre to seat on a my Hope 20five rims was nigh on impossible, until i tried with an airshot... absolute doddle now tbf.

just set your 20fives up tubeless OP, they're designed to be run this way.... you have the rims and the tyres. all you need is tape and valves and bosh! (borrow/buy and airshot or a milkit too)

i now run Schwalbe G-Ones 700x38 on my 20fves (and maxxis mud wrestlers 700x32 in winter on same rims)

Running Panaracer Gravel King SK 40s tubeless  on mine.

Went up no problem with a track pump. It took a while for the rear to remain inflated past a couple of days. Seem to be good at the moment having dragged them round the reiver.

I fitted Nano 40s on an old pair of mavic crossmax. They went up easily and sealed easily.

Lots of people seem to have struggled to seal the rim bed of the hope 20five's due to the large diameter spoke drilling.

I've yet to come across a tyre/rim combo that can't be used but.... what rim tape is fitted? Tubeless tape is thinner and glossier than other options and that can often be enough to make tyre fitting easier - even when using a tube.

WTB tcs tyres are a right pain on my alex rims to (tried riddler, cross boss) using tubes.  I made sure I bought nano race (folding but not tcs) and they are a joy to fit / remove in comparision.

Schwalbe G-One (TLE version) 40mm set up tubeless were fine to fit if a little "baggy" on my 20Five wheels.

Both wheels and tyres are lovely FWIW.

I bought some of the IRC tubeless tyre levers and it’s made fitting & removing wtb riddlers and g-one speeds very easy - both on alexrims volar rather than the hopes but might be worth a punt. No problems with them nicking tubes or damaging the tape either.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I know going tubeless is probably the way to go eventually I just don't have the time right now, we're expecting our second child in July and I'm likely to only be out a couple of times before then, a trip to Arran to ride the Grinder route in a couple of weeks being the reason for trying to fit the Nano's.

I'll look into the IRC levers, thanks @charliem.

@scotroutes it's a strip of Velox tape.

A mate has just bought some Gravelking  SK's to run tubed on some Alexrims so I'll see how he gets on with them (not a direct comparison I know but I've got the same rims on the commuter so might be able to draw some vague conclusions)

Get rid. Fit some Stans/WTB/Tesa tape.

Will also look into the IRC levels albeit I've just sold the Nanos. I'm in a similar position the the OP, I know tubeless is the way to go but in my head, it's faff I don't have time for

@scotroutes wow, and here was me thinking velox tape was still 'good'! Got some wtb tape now so I'll try and give it a go this evening hopefully.
