Hi all!

I've recently moved to Oslo, and since being hit by a car last week which left my giant toughroad gx bent in half, I'm now after a new gravel bike.

Studded tyres are a must for winter commuting here, and while the schwalbe marathon winters are fine most of the time, it would be nice to also be able to fit the 29x2.25" ice spikers for when there is more snow on the ground. They didn't quite fit on the toughroad so I'm interested in any other suggestions that would fit and preferably in aluminium and not too expensive. Failing that, I'd consider something like the nuke proof digger or NS Rag (the best option I have found so far) which will take 27.5x2.25 ice spikers, though preferably something that comes with SRAM 1x or a frame only.

Thanks!

Dave

Genesis Vagabond, although more a Monstercross and is all steel. I liked it a lot.

If you’re spendy then Bearclaw Beaux Jaxon worth a look

Alloy - Trek 920?

That's a good point.

The ability to fit proper ice tyres on a gravel bike instead of tyres intended for a hybrid will greatly improve its usability in winter.

I've found that slick on yer arse ice is more likely to be found on the road than the trail where there's usually a line.

I'd check the clearance on the nukeproof Digger first... I have a 2019 digger which came to me with 2.1 crossmarks which the previous owner had fitted, they had about 1mm clearance on the seat stays!
So it's back on 47c tyres now and I'd says that's the maximum the frame will take with decent clearance.
Have they redesigned the frame for 2020?

Gravel bike with 2.25″ tyre clearance

Is that not a mtb hardtail with drop bars?

Would it be worth getting 650b wheels and ice tyres if you must use the Ice Spikers? Then you don't have to compromise on the frame you want (to a point) for the rest of the year.

IME more of a rigid ATB/MTB with drop-bars.

Or monstercross, as they say.

Need to post a pic of one of these just to look at it some more

I could barely fit 27.5x2.1 in my RAG, 2.0 ok but seemed a bit low overall as its designed for 700c, frame takes 40c only after filing down the chainstay bridge mudguard nut thing.

I have a Genesis Vagabond and run a 2.2 rear and 2.3" front tyres. The rear is close to it's limit with good mud clearance but the front could go bigger if you really wanted. It has tyre clearance like a mountain bike.

On One Bootzipper?. Available in both 650b and 29". Might be a bit weighty but the 650b monstercross looks good. Both have Boost spacing I think

This would be right up your street (literally) but has a 27.5x2.2" max; would a 2.10" Kenda Klondike do the job?

Surly ogre? Singular Gryphon? You might get lucky finding one second hand.

Maybe a Fairlight Secan?
27.5 though but could fit a 2.25 tyre in there.

I’ve recently moved to Oslo, and since being hit by a car last week

Hope you're ok. That sort of thing shakes you up even if you're not injured.
When I was looking for a new bike I looked at this list (but went for the cheap end :-):

Gorilla Monsoon, currently wearing 2.0 tyres but will take 2.4 (which I plan on fitting very soon)
