I tried opening the zipped GPX files of Long Mynd routes from the link cp put on here
Computer said I didn't have correct programme to open them.
Copied to desktop and uploaded to new folder on Garmin, and I can open them okay on the Garmin device itself
But I can't work out how to open them on the computer to view them properly. Should i be able to upload them to Garmin Connect? tried mapmytracks as well, but this didn't work either
should I not just be able to open from the link?
thanks
What do you want to do with the GPX. If you just want to view the route, Open Google Earth and choose FILE --> OPEN and navigate to the GPX File in question. Google Earth will then display it.
If you just want to take a look at those Long Mynd routes I have just started adding them to my site.

Editing web-sites should generally let you upload a route to view, www.bikehike.co.uk is a good one.
okay - so I'm not being that thick then!
it's not just click and open - you need some software in the middle!

All files need some sort of software
eg you wouldn't get far with a doc file without Word or equivalent
I have a problem when I'm sat in my van on a race weekend with no internet access.
How can I view my gpx files, is there some non internet software I can download to view the files?
I guess you'd need something with maps stored locally, maybe Memory Map?
I like Garmin Basecamp for this. It can open GPX files, and display them on a map, plus transfer them to a Garmin device.
It uses maps stored on your PC - as standard it includes a not very detailed map, but you can add much more useful OpenStreetMap based maps for free.
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/ lets you upload GPX and shows you the route on OS/Google/OSM mapping. Altitude profile too if your file includes it.
Garmin Basecamp +1. I've had much frustration with gpx and tcx and dont honestly know what I'm doing half the time. Basecamp looks pretty industrial but it brings up the routes and lets you load them to your device flaw free.
luddite officially helped - tried bikehike, easy peasy.
think my confusion was that I expected Garmin connect to do this for some reason
thanks all
If you create a Viewranger account and go to my view ranger that will allow you to upload the gpx file and view on there
