So, my aging (10yrs) Gore Pac lite needs a new zip. total quote is £45 from scottishoutdoor.
I use this in summer, when I get caught out in showers mostly, not for prolonged rainy rides, as I hate being out in the rain and in summer, you end up sweaty and wet inside the jacket anyway, despite Gore's great qualities.
£45 is decent, if it was a couple of years old, but for a 10 year old jacket, I'm not so sure, especialy when I can get an endura packjac for under £30 from CRC.
but, it is still a gore, has no tears, just the odd bit of scuff on the ripstop, and is still waterproof.
I also hate chucking things away that could be useful.
so, new jacket, or new zip on the old one? is it worth it?
You're not comparing like with like. The £30 Endura Pakajak is barely showerproof, it's not a waterproof jacket.
A new zip for a tried and tested good jacket seems logical. It's once the seams start going that repair becomes a losing battle.

Not directly, I was under the impression that repars would be directed via scottishoutdoorcentre.
Looks like saving a 10+yr old jacket is better than spending similar on a new one?
unless there is anything of similar waterproofness and packability for under £50?

Well, it isn't, but there is a storm flap and the seams are taped.
SMG say they may not be able to get the tape to seal however, which does mean that rain will get past that fairly easily.
for the amount i actually use it, I'm thinking that I may be better with a new packable waterproof. :-/
Repair every time.
You could probably pick up a new paclite in the sale for about £70-80. Personally I'd retire that one and maybe lob it in the back of the car for emergencies, then buy a new one and hope for another 10 years use
