A friend and I are looking to cycle from a campsite around Was****er (Lake District)to Coniston this weekend, for no reason other than a leisurely spin.
We were planning to take road bikes and the route seems pretty straight forward except for a short stint on the A595.
When I put the two destinations into Google Maps it comes up with a route which seemingly takes us between Great Gable and Scafell. Now from what I can remember of this route it didn't look particularly cycle friendly. Has anyone ridden it before? Or do directions for cyclists on Google Maps not take into account minor details such as suitability of the route for bikes?
going that way is a bridleway, and is anything but a leisurely spin.
It's good and tried to take into account all bridleways that are available but if there isn't any just chucks you onto B roads.
I used it to plan my route to work, just don't rely on the satnav features.
I can't trust it at all. Some real roads aren;t on it and some of the roads it does route me down are steep, rocky forest tracks which are no use on the road bike for a commute.
Try Strava - it creates routes based on how often they're used by cyclists.
Probably should have been a little clearer, it's now a toss up between road bikes and the road or taking MTBs and going between Great Gable and Scafell.
I just wanted to be sure that there is a path and that the path is rideable
well there's about 2000 feet of climbing/pushing across one of the busiest pedestrian routes in the lakes in height of summer, but apart from that...
seriously, the route up to great gable is a serious push and then the route across to langdale is steep down. I've never ridden it but its steep enough when you're walking
