I'm looking to get some bib shorts for when I use the turbo trainer (hateful thing!) and for when I decide to actually go outside to cycle again (choosing not to at the minute).
What's the current recommendation? When I say good value, I mean under £50. I've been quite happy using the standard Aldi / Lidl gear and have quite liked the Polaris basic padded shorts as well, but looking to get some bib versions this time.
Decathlon? Planet X? Polaris?
Thanks

DHB from wiggle have been good for the price, got about half a dozen pairs used for commuting, general riding and racing with no issues

+1 Get the best version whilst on sale that you can - I’ve had a couple of pairs of Aeron Pro and they are very good.

I've averaged about 12 hours a day on the bike touring in Decathlon shorts I bought in the sales for £15. More than adequate for the turbo I'd say.

Also have some of the cheap Planet X offerings (possibly the pro-line) but they're quite thick material and way too warm for the house.

The DHB stuff is good but expensive in comparison, and the really cheap, bottom of the line, DHB stuff has not been great quality in my opinion.

I'd go Decathlon personally.

I've found Decathon stuff to be good previously, as above. I now have 2 pairs of Funkier 17 Panel bib shorts which I wear regularly, and 3 pairs of Sundried Peloton bib shorts which also get used a lot. I bought one pair of the Sundried bibs to try out and was so impressed I bought two more as I commute by bike 3 or 4 days a week and wanted to be sure I won't run out while waiting for the washing to dry!. Sundried are £50 a pair but use discount code FITPIXIE to get a 50% discount. Note I've nothing to do with them, just like the product. The Funkier bibs are just as good but a bit moe expensive

I've always liked Morvelo ones, just their standard ones. Often on sale at <£50

Lusso - made in uk too. Just got a pair and they’re great. High end ones are about £80, but they are as good as mouth more expensive shorts. Lots of 10/10 reviews. They have sales and some slightly cheaper lines too, though I’ve not tried them.

Most comfortable bibs I own are Castelli Aero Races. Also like Endura Pro Sl, but find they are less durable. Castelli do a cheaper plain black bib, the Endurance X2, which is a simpler design with the top end pad. Had a pair for almost five years now, and frankly, I think it's the best plain bib for the money and I've seen them on sale for about 50 quid.

If it had to be under 50, I would be looking at galibier.cc.

I was recommended the howies bibs by a survivor of the LEL and I like them. A little short on the leg (if that bothers you – I'm 5'11" and wearing S/M shorts) but stretchy enough to pull the front down for a stand-up wee.

Giordana FRC are very good, and can be had in the periodic sales from Bikerooms in Manchester. They are nice and long in the legs, which is something I like.

There are some on ebay at the moment too.

Size up though. I'm a large in most shorts but XL in Giordana.

Decathlon (500/900/van rysel)

DHB

The DHB pad is quite soft, it's not doing anything more than reducing friction. Whereas the Decathlon is vary firm so you're actually sat on a cushion. IME the Decathlon one is most comfortable for long rides but eventual;y starts to rub. The DHB isn't immediately the most comfortable but never gets any worse.

Alpkit ones are excellent.

PX ones fell apart, delaminated. Design might have changed now.

Decathlon are fine. Don't get the 100s though. 500s are good.
There seems to be a new 900 MTB version which is weirdly cheap (£25) compared to the rest of the range. I haven't tried them though.

Like continuity I would say keep an eye open for reduced Castellis, especially the Progetto pads. I've had a few pairs very cheap. Otherwise I agree with Galibier.

Decathlon 100s are fine for an hour indoors, but a bit crap for anything longer. Their pad (as mentioned by @thisisnotaspoon) is quite large, though - I don't have a huge problem with it but it feels a bit weird for the first 10k or so.

Edit: I was referring to the pad for the more expensive models

I’ve just ordered a pair of Endura  Singletrack ones from sportpursuit, about £35 off the top of my head.

no idea if they’re any good mind but thought I’d throw the option in!

Zipvit were amazing value - I tracked down where they were made and couldn't source similar shorts from the same manufacturer for anything like the price Zipvit were charging.

I'll be trying https://galibier.cc/shorts-tights-suits/ when I next need some. Everything I've had from them has been great quality and value.

Be careful getting cheap shorts for Turbos.  Turbo training exaggerates friction & rubbing.   I user cheaper shorts for a turbo but I've 2 pairs I'll only use as outers when "doubling up" because they've rubbed me raw in the past - then you can kiss the turbo goodbye for a week.

TDLR you might be Ok, you might not.

My rapha cores arrived today (25% off). Impressed as they seem to have same pad as my classic bibs. Ordered another pair!

Galibier are great, just find the straps a bit short for pee breaks!

This might be frowned upon, but I’ve got a couple of pairs of Didoo bibs from Amazon. £20, comfy and fit well. I fully appreciate that there’ll be plusher things out there, but for getting muddy and a couple of hours in the saddle, they’ve been good.

Only downside is that it does look a little like they say Dildo from a distance!!!! 😂😂
