Hi guys.

Hoping to go to 1X9 with a 32T ring and bash with chain guide and an 11-34 cassette. Is there anything else i need?

Cheers

If you really want to keep it cheap you can keep your current front derailleur (assuming you have one) as a chain guide. If you want to spend a little bit more, a short caged rear derailleur and a dedicated single chainring is nice.

You may have to mess about with your chainline to get it right (if you can use the entire cassette in the middle chainring with your current setup it will be fine).

Oh, and shorten the chain if you reuse the one you have.

Get a chain device. It's a lesson learned the hard way...

thanks for all the help guys.

Instead of buying a dedicated single ring, could i just buy a Deore Middle ring (32t) and use that?

Cheers

If you are buying a new middle ring get one designed for the job.

If you're going to do that you may as well just use your current middle ring.

It'll work, but not very well, chainrings for triple/double setups have specially shaped teeth and shifting ramps that are designed to throw the chain off in order to make changing gear easier. A single specific ring wont have these, so will keep the chain on much better.

EDIT: Too late. Coyote is right, if you have to buy a new ring then get a single specific one. If you've already got a ring you can use it, but it wont work as well.

Chain Device & Shorter mech possible but also consider a 34/36t ring depending on where your riding.

I run 1x9 and use a superstar chainguide. They are great for the money, either a top and bottom guide or just go for a top one which is about £20 I think. A little noisy but never lost a chain.

Get fitter, or only ride places where you don't need a granny.

Like robbonzo i use 1 x 9 with a superstar bottom bkt mount chain device. Using standard 32t ring and not lost chain yet.

I did the same about a week ago, I've used a BB mounted Stinger (90g) and a modified N-Gear Jumpstop (30g!) with a bash. A lighter replacement for the Stinger would reduce that further.

Not mine, but this is what I copied:

On a Hone bash the jump-stop doesn't hang over the edge and looks tidier.

You simply email N-Gear and ask for the right size, he sends it to you....then you pay! If you don't like it, return it with no payment. It took about 9 days to arrive from TX, I didn't get any email response just the packet in the mail.

Make sure the jump-stop is as close fitting as possible in your lowest gear (it will need to point towards the rear hub slightly due to the chainline in biggest cog) and get it low to the bash. Quite easy to fit and doesn't clog with mud anywhere near as much as a mech as there's less going on.

I am finding it a little hard work on the climbs though 😳 But mechanically it's functioning great despite some purposefully clumsy landings on my Blue Pig X.
