I've been told to use a 20" BMX tube with the threaded valve to hold it to the rim but can't find one in my LBS. Can anyone tell me which make of innertube to buy please?

It's a schwalbe 20" presta with removable core that you want.

I used a Tesco BMX tube, though it's schrader so might not do you (almost all schraders have removable valve cores, and my experience was that you don't need a threaded valve at all).
