I'm considering going Ghetto tubeless on all my wheels and have been looking into the compatabilty of various tyre / rim combinations.

It occured to me that a thread listing what combinations people have made to work using what method would be a useful resource for everyone.

Therefore I'd be grateful if people could list there successful and unsuccesful combinations in the following format:

Rim
Tyre
Ghetto Methodology (20" innertube, Gorilla tape etc)
Faff Factor (ie how easy was it, did you need a compressor, Ghetto inflator etc)

Thanks

Tallie

i got mavic x717 disc rims too go with verdastain black panthers the xtrac ones i had to build the rim bed up a bit with electric tape first then used a 20" tube as per the norm

then i found some joes rims strips at crc last year for a £5 a pop and my other wheelsets are tubless anyway so only had the one set too do

Last bump in an attempt to get some input...

Clearly my thread title and original post were no where near trollish enough...

Please feel free to hijack the thread to engage in pointless arguments, make wild generalisations or correct my poor grasp of the English language. Once you've done this if you could just let me know what ghetto combinations you've got to work I'd really appreciate it.

I think ghetto with a 20" inner tube, is by its very nature easy to set up because you've pulled an extended bit of a slit inner tube up onto the sidewalls of the rim, pretty much giving perfect contact with the beads of the tyre. I know the few ghetto setups I've done like this have all pumped up easier than a conventional tubeless setup.

Obviously any UST or tubeless ready tyre will be perfect for the job, but non tubeless tyres can be ok too. Most notably Maxxis are good, though I've had success with Kenda's (when they finally sealed), Conti (again when they finally sealed) and Michelin's myself. Supposedly Schwalbe work well too.

As for rims, I'm not so sure the rim matter so much if you're using the 20" BMX tube Ghetto method. I've used different Mavic rims, with one layer of normal velox rimtape on, then the BMX tube over that. Has worked fine each time.

Biggest faff with ghetto is that you've pretty much got to use a new 20" inner tube every time you change tyres, unless you leave massive amounts of ugly overhang. Not an issue if you rarely change tyres, though if you do, some Stans rimstrips might make more sense.

Used the 20" bmx method on Dt 5.1's. The maxxis ardent and kenda nevegals went up no problem. Did use an airline though.

The only time I've had a ghetto problem is when they tyre has been brand new and so it hasn't wanted to seat to any rim. A few weeks with an inner tube in it and it came round to my way of thinking the next time I had a go with it.

Ghetto success with Spank Ozzy rims, Mavic 729 rims, continental vertical tyres, high rollers 2.5 dual ply, high rollers single ply folding, minions folding and minion 2.5's, nevegrals have all been fine.

Currently got a folding High Roller and a folding Minion on some Spank Ozzy rims.

I use 20" inner tubes from Asda. Less than £2 each.

Easiest ghetto conversion was spank Ozzy rims and the folding minion and high roller.
