These are cross head bolt road cleats which won't move. The bolts have worn down to the state of having hardly any slots to put a screwdriver in. Anybody got any good ideas before I take the drill to them ?

Hammer. Chisel. SMASH.
Worked for me. Ended up with a snapped bolt and just got the pliers on the stump. Easy.

Hit them with a hammer several times before drilling not only does it make you feel better, it breaks the grip of any rust and makes removal of the remaining bit of thread easier.

Sounds like a straight-to-drill scenario.

I agree with therealhoop. I had exactly the same problem one and made a new slot in the screws. Drilling could get messy.

File some flats on and get a spanner on them. That's what I did a few weeks ago.

Just cut your cleats off with a hack saw, then you'll be able to undo the bolts with a set of pliers.

Don't hammer the bolts, this may well damage the threaded inserts in the shoes.
