tried cutting down one side, to slide it in to no avail 🙁

silicon lube might help.
have used a short off cut (20mm) of camelback hose in the past when i ran out, worked well and was easier to install.
😕 looked crap though
im thinking of just helitaping the brake hose upto the point of entry - i know it will move slightly when suspension/bars move but it will be pretty minimal, and just make it really thick all the way around ( 3 layers or so) to try and spot things spilling into it...
