Hi all, Im relatively new mountain biking and new to the forum so please be gentle about my questions ! I currenlty ride a 2011 voodoo bantu which isnt an expensive bike but I ride on a tight budget. The Bike is currently 24 speed but I have noticed I rarely using the largest front chain ring and my 8 speed cassette is getting worn. My plan is to convert to a 2x9 set up but I want to do it as cheap as possible. I know ill need a 9 speed cassette and shifter but will i be able to use the 8 speed derrailiuer (crap spelling)? I presume if I put a 2 chain ring crank up front the 3 speed shifter will be fine? Any help or info will be very much appreciated, thank you peeps.

Here is a link to the bike:-

The rear should be fine, the front may need a new derailleur depending on whether you use a double specific chainset, or a converted triple.

Keep the cranks you've got, & use Deore stuff to go 1x10 with a 36-11 cassette. About £100...
