2 x 29ers, one needs a new drivetrain and I'm thinking of 1 x 10.

The other runs a triple but where I ride I never use the granny, so it's gearing is Shimano 32 middle & 44 outer with 9 speed 32 x 11 cassette. It's not very often I go in big front, tiny back but I am quite often 1 or 2 down from there.

What size 1 x 10 single front and cassette will cover most of these gears?

Cheers

Well, you currently have lowest gear of 32 front and 32 rear, which would match nicely to a 36t front and 36 rear to keep the same low gear.

So the 36 front/11 rear would be equivalent to between a 13 and 14t rear on a 44t front chainring, so about what you use now...

11-36 cassette, 36t front chainring. Simples! ๐Ÿ˜€

Cheers breatheasy.

So, if I get a 36 x 11 rear and a 36 on the front, if I was in big ring where would it be on the cassette that I've got at the moment?

On about the 3rd smallest sprocket.

That's a reasonably tall bottom gear for a 29er though, a 34t may be better.

Sorry, not sure what you're getting at there.

Cheers do you mean 34 on the front or back?

Think njee20 meant 34t for the front.

Then a 11-36 will give you a slightly lower gear than you've already got. A 11-34 will give you the same as what you've got now.

Obviously either casette will give you the same 'highest gear as they are both 11t...

Another question (sorry)

When looking for cassettes do they have 9 speed, 10 speed etc but front cogs don't have a such 9 or 10 speed etc?

Technically front chainrings are 9 speed or 10 speed specific. I've run both combinations, i.e. 10 speed 'chainring' with 9 speed chain and vice versa without much issue.

Personally I'd not be too bothered, but if push comes to shove get a 10 speed one to 'future proof' yourself.

I run a 36t Hope single ring up front which is compatible for 9 and 10 speed chains with a b/b guide to keep the chain on and have a 11-36 10 speed cassette at the back. The gearing seems right for me but I live in hilly Yorkshire. Sometimes, I do wish I had a bigger ring up front for the long straight/downhill bits but it is a good all rounder other than that!
