going to take the plunge a buy a giant defy composite 2 or 3..just not sure whether to pay an extra £200 for sram apex. The one upside of the apex is the gearing on the cassette.. it would make hills less of a chore but unfortunately cant test either as there internet based sales.. anyone had any experiance of either/ both?

According to the Giant site both cassettes are 11-28 10s.

sorry, meant to add that there 2012 bikes. the sram is an 11-32.. tiagra is a 11-28. not sure 'how much' of a difference there is when it comes to a really steep hill... 😕

You can fit a 12-30 cassette to 10spd Tiagra now happily with a short cage mech, or up to 32T cassette with a long cage.

Try both if you can, see whether you prefer the way the Shimano or the SRAM shifters work. They work in quite different ways, so you'll probably prefer the one to the other...

Test rode the sram version last week, probably the smoothest road bike I have ever ridden and found the sram shifters a good shape nice to use etc.

I've recently got a bike with Sram Apex (Whyte Saxon Cross) and, so far I'm finding the gears very easy to get used to. I've yet to go for a long ride on it, and I find that shifting problem usually start when I'm tired and losing concentration.
