A few weeks back I bought a secondhand BMC MC01 set up as single speed with a Gates drive. Intended to keep it as a nice weather commuter but this week I've been riding it through all the crap weather we've had, on road and down crappy, rutted and muddy bridle ways.
I'm so over the moon with the feel and performance of the drivechain. And today I just ran a hose over it to get it ready for the ride in.
Brilliant. So what nightmare is waiting in the wings for me? Will I die and what will kill me?
Currently smugness is the No1 suspect...
My daughter has one.
I am jealous.
People bang on about drag and efficiency, if its on a SS then these probably don't matter.
They'll say they aren't as easy as a chain to repair but a belt weighs less than a chain tool so just carry a spare.
Basically they are just an alternative, not better, not worse just different.
I got the Mrs a new commuter with the Gate carbon drive, Shimano hydraulic discs and and an Alfine 8.
V nice. Silent, smooth and near enough maintenance free. Keep tyres inflated, batteries charged and an occasional hose-down (lots of wet leaf mulch on the roads/paths at the mo). The only thing that's needed attention so far are the Scott branded mudguards coming a bit loose.
