Garmin MTB mount - out front?

I've just ordered the edge 830 with the MTB package.

This has the speed sensor, remote etc. but swaps out the standard out front mount for the MTB mount which positions the 830 on the stem instead of in front of the bars. As I'll mainly use this on my gravel bike so is it possible to just fit it back to front so the 830 is in front of the bars, or is it a bit too short to do this?

Thanks!

Should work fine. It will come down to where you place the hinge part of the mount and what angle you have it at.

i bought a standard pack 530, it came with an outfront mount and two band on bar/stem mounts.. you'll probably have one of those you could use on the longer stem? although i prefer an outfront on my drop bar bikes as it's much easier to see

I really like the idea of the outfront mount but having crashed a few times, it always seems to get skelped. I now just have the computer on the bar mount. I'd happily have the outfront mounted backwards (outback?), But that seems to put it in a similar position to over the stem but to the side and could then get knocked by my wobble knees when I think I can manage up a steep section.
Secret is not to crash, but if I do, I've been lucky enough that Lezyne and Garmin have replaced the burst back of the unit.

I’ve got mine on a headset spacer mount, on my mtb but on a gravel bike out front probably best.

I’m fairly sure the mtb mount is just a flipped round out front mount anyway

I use a top cap with built in Garmin mount.... this one from Nukeproof.   Works well.

I've always put them on a band-mount on the top tube, not lost/damaged one yet.

I’m guessing the shape of the drop bar and the brake hood would protect it in a crash if it was mounted out front on the gravel bike, on my mtb I’ll probably use the rubber bands on the bars, think that would be safest in a crash as the rubber bands should allow it to move in an impact rather than break.

It's not. The MTB mount is shorter and has a hinge. That gives more flexibility in mounting position whereas for the road version you ideally want it a bit lower than the top of the bar so there is no aero disadvantage having the GPS unit out front.

MTB Mount and 830 on my ‘MTB’ gravel bike right now :

and on the out front mount on my more road orientated gravel bike:

Having destroyed a couple of outfront mounts, and almost destroyed the computer it was carrying I 3d printed myself something like this

Mine is stuck onto some frame protection tape I put on the top tube, so I can reverse it more easily. No problems since.

Thanks for the pics. Looks like if you reversed it and also rotated the mounting with the hinge positioned on the leading edge of the bars you could get it lower and out front.

Regarding top tube mounting, I guess you are taking your eyes off the trail more so increasing the chance of crash.

I guess you could, though probs not much different to the regular out front one - they come in 2 lengths, standard as above and extended for the 1040 size units

MTBs I use a top-cap mount so it's right on top of the steerer (although I don't actually bother with a bar mount GPS much on the MTB these days).
For the road bike I use a big old out front mount and the gravel bike has one of those offset headset spacer jobs that effectively mounts the device on top of the stem but isn't as gash as the stock O-Ring mounts that come in the box (which I use for mounting a light)...

All gloriously inconsistent...

I have out front on road, but a stem cap one on MTB. My mate has an outfront on his MTB, came off and smashed his 530. My 530 was fine after the crash that resulted in me being in hospital for a week, it was just 20m up the bridleway where I'd hit the deck before sliding...

Yes.
I nearly piled in to the back of my wife last week on the MTB, end of the ride both of us flying down the gravel road at the bottom of the mountain. I looked down to check the map, she slowed a lot to check the signpost and I’m still not sure how I didn’t hit her 😳

But overall I find the top tube a good position on the MTB & over the stem good on the gravel bike.

I tried a stem cap on the MTB but knocked it off and broke the mount in a near-OTB moment. I think it’s much less vulnerable on the top tube.
