Just used it on a ride - all was well.
Stopped the timer at the end of the ride and turned the unit off.
Plugged into the laptop with the usb cable and garmin training centre fired up immediately - the screen did not show battery charging in progress as usual
I unplugged the unit and pressed the on button - the green back light came on but nothing appeared on screen!
What have i done?
have you reset it?
think it's turn on whilst holding down the 'lap' button
done nowt - doing a software update in the hope it resets it
Have a look here: linky
There is another key combination which is sometimes required if this one doesn't work. I'll try and find that too.
the reset did reset the unit but still no screen display
still no joy
It's not spent too long in the sun has it? Sometimes that messes up the display for a bit then it returns to normal after a few hours at ambient temperature.
2 hrs
"If your device has locked up during use, you can reset your unit by pressing the "Mode"(reset/lap) and "Power" buttons at the same time. In addition, please make sure that the device has the latest software version available. "
I've had to do this reset on my 205 once when the screen was blank.
how long do you hold each button down?
Five seconds ish from memory
If that doesn't work then try this:-
""To power the unit back on, press the "Mode" and "Reset" buttons at the same time. Let go of those two buttons, press the power button, and the unit will turn back on.""
nothing 🙁
Tried both combinations ? (I posted a second one above)
Remember to press really hard on the reset button as they can get gummed up and need a very firm press to register
will give it another go - if no good is it possible the screen has died for some reason?
My screen died a fortnight ago. Mid ride got off the bike for a stop. When I got back on no screen! I can see the display very very faintly if I hold it at an angle. When plugged into pc "battery charging" comes up with smeary (nice word!) lines from the letters. Anyway mine's goosed, so sending it back to Garmin for replacement- £49. Was just in warranty as well but can find the receipt 🙁 BTW searched t'internet and tried all the resets etc in vain... Good luck.
what email addy did you use at garmin?
Don't bother with e-mail, they took over a week to get back to me that way. After they finally responded they gave a phone number (0808 238 0000) to call to get an RMA number. You have to pay the "repair" fee then they give you the RMA number to quote when you return the unit. They'll probably ask what's wrong first and talk you through a reset. I'm posting mine to them tomorrow so I can't testify to turn around speed, but from what I've read it should be within a week or so. But if you really must e-mail them address is productsupport@garmin.com
You're better phoning Garmin - number is on website - they do a good telephone support process and if they can't cure it that way the returns process is pretty quick, basically as soon as they get your unit in they send you a reconditioned one by return (then I guess deal with the one you sent in).
If it's warranty it's free, if not it's a flat rate. I got an Edge 305 that was well out of warranty fixed for £65 so a 205 should be a bit cheaper. The repair has a 12 month warranty on it IIRC.
will ring them tomorrow
cheers
WOOP WOOP
Just got up and unplugged the GPS unit from the charger (had been on over night) and it turned on straight away 🙂
WOnder if the contrast had been turned to superlight? maybe i don't know but at least it is now working again.
On the motion based forum apparently if you do a hard reset it loses all battery life so maybe it was completely flat hence not powering up??
