Kinda busy here at the moment, you may want to book.

Lots of good places around, what kind of food and where? I'm a fan of the Dogs restuarants (v. central), also Roseleaf in Leith

Chez Jules.
Very good basic French brasserie stuff, excellently done, cheapish, eye-candy staff.(Both sexes)

So good that we went back for a second meal there the following evening.

Rhubarb restaurant is excellent. Was there last week. Recommended.

David Banns in St marys street ( veggie) does not take bookings during the festival - first come first served but if you get there before 7 you should get a table.

Recommended. Very good indeed - not the usual worthy gloop that veggie restaurants sell

Most places will be fully booked.

Kings Wark on the shore is a good bet for non booked as well.

In the centre of town.

L'escargot bleu (sp), Broughton Street - French, big portions, also horse, ox cheeks, pigs cheeks if you fancy.
Cambridge Bar, Young Street - Proper Burgers.
Ondine, George IV Bridge - Seafood, does cheap lunch deal.
Cucina, in Missoni hotel - Italian, also does cheap lunch deal.

Down in Leith.

Teuchters Landing - mugs of stuff, soups, chips, stovies. Nice tables outside by canal.

I'm a big fan of Outsider on George IV Bridge. Great location, unfussy, food is excellent. Liable to be hoaching during the festival though, best to book in advance. Down Leith way, I'd recommend the Shore. Unpretentious food using local ingredients done really really well, very interesting wee building too.

what JamieP said

can recommend Black Bos on Blackfriars Street (just off Royal Mile) for mainly veggie food, bar one side, restuarant the other. nice both sides.

Ousider good but not cheap and bound to be busy. Villager opposite is good too - but also bound to be busy.

[vested interest] filmhouse does bar/bistro food - and it's been pretty quiet during the festival so far... [/vested interest]
