I am considering buying a full sus bike and would like to know the pro's and con's for full carbon frames.
Probably varies from manufacturer (I've seen a 2 week old 2010 Commencal carbon frame in 3 pieces in my lbs).
I had a Giant XTC composite frame for a while and it felt bullet proof.
Considering that significant parts of fighter jets, airliners, F1 cars etc are made from carbon composite I'd not worry too much.
The one thing that Commencal have going for them is their replacement service. Commencal acknowledge that their frames break and have a quick turn around on issuing replacements. The pro's of carbon frames are well publicised although some designs are criticised by riders for being too stiff. This is entirely rider dependant. There are different grades of carbon being produced, it is not enough to merely say that fighter jets are made of the same stuff! Take the time to learn about the manufacturing of carbon frames to understand the differences so that you can accurately select a frame that you can trust.
OP how many metal frames have you broken?
Broken three Marin frames and one Heckler frame, yet to break my Ibis Mojo ๐
Saw a guy at the weekend on a 2 month old 2011 Yeti ASR5 Carbon and it had cracked both sides of the chainstay either side of the main swingarm bearings... not overly impressive...
Yeti and MSC aside, carbon frames are generally fine. I know someone who flared open a headtube on a carbon xc hardtail frame but that's probably because he was forever doing stoppies on it, not really the intended use of a lightweight race frame I imagine...
