I just got a FSA Orbit XLII, mail order, as I wanted a headset with a split crown race and was recommended this after a previous post, but this one doesn't have the split crown race ๐ I'm guessing there are 2 types, maybe this one is OE or something, but didn't think to ask as I thought they would all have this? So, can I cut it myself to make it into a split crown race, I can do a good job of it at work and it's only alloy, but will I weaken it or something, anyone done this?

Yeah just get a grinder and cut it in half. Job done. You might want to roughen the running surface with some superglue and iron filings too. Might as well pack the bearings with some of that beach sand grease as well whilst you've got it all apart.
if it's sealed bearing headset then it'll probably be fine BUT i've no idea whether the split races are made of a tougher material
Where did you get it from?
I got one recently from CRC and it has a split crown race.
If you specifically wanted a split crown race get a refund or replacement?
DeVs ๐
Yeah it's sealed bearings
that's what I was wondering, the split race version is listed as 7075/T6 and the info on FSA's website is 7075/T6 but doesn't say anything about split or normal races.no idea whether the split races are made of a tougher material
Got it off Ebay, a business/cycle parts company, half RRP. I'll contact them and see what they say.
the split crown race is the cane creek type as the split crown race is a cane creek pattern
i cant see any reason it wouldnt work..
Why would you want to spilt it?
They're very easy to put on
I split the one in my S3 at last spring and have had no issues with it all.
Makes it a damm site easier to change forks from one bike to another if you've got different head sets
