This weather opens up some new riding possibilities - namely on sand. As it is bloody freezing, riding along the top of my local sand dunes becomes possible, and bloody good it is too! Nice 2 mile rollercoaster ride with views over to Arran. Lovely.
Ours are a bit steep to ride but me and the pooch had fun on them today. Normally you can just throw yourself off them but they are like concrete with 2" of snow on top just now so quite treacherous. It's strange walking along a beach where the high tide point is marked where the snow ends. The local footie team came down to train at low tide too as there is nowhere else for them!
This same weekend last year I didn't fancy the ice on the Pentlands so rode out on the John Muir coastal trail from Edinburgh. Initially, I kept looking back at the snowy hills and wondering if I'd made the right choice. Didn't consider the possibility of riding the dunes but it was a plasant surprise when we reached them.
In Norfolk right now and have miles and miles of dunes but sand seems finer and less likely to be hard enough - not that you see any sand. On Friday the beach was under a foot of snow.
