1 ride in straight from the shop and an errant cable has tried to eat through my pike crown,
not a fan of copter tape, is there anything i can put over the cables that saves my frame/forks?

Nope, they're made out of fish.
Go and ask the LBS to sort out your cables.. I spent last summer chopping meters and meters of outer off new bikes to tidy them up.
