I have an Orange Evo 8 hardtail with Fox Talas 110 > 140 RLC forks. I have fit an old hope Mini caliper and had to fit a 205mm rotor. The forks are about 2 years old and have had some fairly hard use. Just recently i have noticed a serious judder under braking and you can see the bottom part of the forks noticably vibrate fore and aft. There is slight signs of the gold coating wearing off near the seal area. Is this just wear on the forks, ie they need serviced or do you think the big rotor is causing the problem. I used to run 160mm with juicy 3's.
Thanks in advance
Roy
im far from an expert but this could be fork bushings that need replacing?
I've just posted with the same problem on a brand new pair of fox 32 float 29er
sounds like the bushes are gone. Also sounds like the coating on the stanchion is going too - this isn't actually a problem (stiction will increase ever so slightly, and probably not that you'll ever feel) but I'm sure whoever services them will give you a nice quote for replacement.
Why do you have to run a 205 rotor?
205 is too big for a 32mm fork.
That pulsing is from pulse wave rotor design
kanckered rotor?
I had the same on my old minis with a warped and dinged rotor
Probably glazed brake pads.
I've also got this problem on a fox float 29, on a brand new canyon.
What brakes and rotor size you running crazybaboon?
thanks for all the posts - its a brand new hope 205 rotor, the reason its 205mm is thats the only way to can get an old Hope Mini to fit a Post Mount fork. The pads are new too. Interesting comment that 32mm fork cant cope with 205mm rotor. I think its got worse so do wonder if its the bushes. The fork is probably needing a servise anyway so will see what that does for the problem.
Interesting comment that 32mm fork cant cope with 205mm rotor.
The only folk that use/need 205mm rotors are downhillers or fat barstewards! ๐
It's a avid elixir 180mm rotor
It's the only bike that hasn't got a 203mm front disc on, but it's the only bike that does it!
Possibly worn rotor (and too big for that fork) & worn bushs. Some rotors are incompatible with some calipers, essentially the pad area drops down into the spokes of the rotor and causes way more 'pulsing' effect than any wavey rotor ever would.
I've run 203 rotors on every bike I've owned since running hope xc4's many years ago, never had fork judder on any bike except this one.
I've run 203's on fox 32 forks with no problems, no judder even on old psylos and sid's with 28mm stanchions.
Brand new bike, every thing adjusted right yet judders like mad!
I run a brand new fox float 150 fork with 203 formula rotor and can get the same vibration/flex when using an all mountain / trail bike for downhill , I just asumed that the previous statement was the issue !!! Wrong bike for the style of riding , never have an issue when trail centre riding ??? Has never bothered me TBA
