Just wonder if anyone has any experience of how Floats differ to Vanillas in terms of plushness on the trail ?
Air sprung forks were never as good as oil bath damped forks and I wonder if this has changed and the difference is not so noticeable these days ?
Thanks
Having owned both I'm in favour of vanillas, however both forks were/are 2004 models so may have improved with the new low friction sliders...
Rode both back to back yesterday (float and vanilla 36) while demoing bikes at Laggan. When the trail points down there was no comparison. The Vanilla just always felt more controlled, sections where the float started to feel overwhelmed the vanilla simply rocked on through.
Got F120 RLCs on one bike and Vanilla R QR15 on the other. Vanillas are much smoother, and I don't miss the compression damping adjustment at all. A lockout would be good for climbing, partly because they're so 'plush' that they react really well to every tiny bump in the trail.
I'd recommend the Vanillas personally, and the QR15 axle, it's a noticeable improvement.
HTH
Got both with qr15 axle and vanilla's are much smoother,
the float,s are fit and seem pretty bad with initial stiction.
i thought my 06 floats were lovely compared to my 09 talas so much so i was gonna swap the internals to convert to float but was pondering vanilla swap.
ive just got hold of some 06 z1 bombers and they are way better than my floats so if the vanillas are owt like then coil is the way to go for sure
Is it possible to change floats to coil?
I've got some 09 Vanillas for sale (RLC, QR15) ๐
yes but you cant then change them back to air if you change your mind . once coil thats it
Sorry to hijack the thread but where would I get the coil internals to convert it?
vans are lovely. they dont lose out much to my 40's in terms of control. now the trails are getting firmer and speeding up, i'm using all available travel. they have a nice linear rate.
so far, i have only a handful of rides on x2 '10 floats. my own are still quite sticky so hopefully they will loosen up a bit. i'm having some trouble getting the right air pressure. what feels good in the carpark and gives correct sag doesn't equal more than 5 inchs of travel used. it feels like the last part gets horrifically progressive.
other than that i rather like both floats, i most likely need more time to play with settings.
shorty mojo sell the bits to convert its about 60 for the bits iirc
Ok cheers
What bits are needed to convert them? It's probably obvious but I can't work it out somehow.
Mojo don't seem to have it on the site ๐
no its not on the site mate you have to call them. if you tell them what fork you have they will sent the bits you need as a job lot , its cheaper that way too.
hairy with the talas to float you have to swap out the bung in the bottom of the inner left leg for a different sized one . swap the talas internals to float. do fluids fasten all up and pump up and swap top caps.
very similar thing from float to van (not sure if the bung on the float to van is different tho) very simple tho
kits were around 60 iirc when i spoke to them last week
i had both vans and float and it's van anytime...
Recently switched from Vans ('04 125mm) to Float ('09 140mm - Float are nowhere near as plush.
I wonder if you can switch to coil and keep the lockout?
tops you only change the left leg internals . So if you have a lockout it will still have it ie an rlc stays an rlc. So mojo told me anyway ๐

That's air forks for you. I've had that on every fork I've owned apart from Pace ones.
