I'm thinking the 36's but never had a Fox fork before, always had Rockshox forks.
What you running?
Cheers
After having both. fox 36 all the way!
Wot he said ^^
I also had dvo's for a time...
Got pikes on mine. Had 36s on the strive. Think pike better overall, 36s were brill at smashing through stuff though
Lyriks.
New lyriks, great forks
Lyrik > Pike > 36 from someone who has had all 3. The 36 quite a long way down too. They seem really hit & miss whether they work, or are a harsh, spiking mess.
New Lyrik is more on a par with 36's rather than the Pike
36 all the way.
Fitted and used plenty of both on nomads, had a customers few that chose pikes come back for a 36 upgrade never had any of the 36 owners come back to get a pike.
Not that the pikes ae crap, i've had them on my own bike. But t given the choice it would be the fox, much more tuneable, stiffer and just feel a bit smoother in my experience.
Having recently changed to the new 36s after two sets of Pikes I much prefer the feel and additional stiffness of the 36s. That's not to say they are massively better, they just suit me I think
Öhlins 🙂
Pike's are close, but 36's are the better fork in my opinion. This is an old argument though, the new one is 36's vs Lyrics. If I was building a Nomad today this is the question I'd be asking.
36 definitely. From what I read they need setting up right otherwise can feel harsh but they have so much adjustability if you can't get a setting you are happy with you probably don't know what you are doing. I use the book settings on mine and they feel as close to a dh fork as I can imagine is possible without getting a dh fork. Expensive but well worth the premium over the rockshox which always feel a bit cheap and nasty. Not badly damped but not as good as the fox.
The reality is that you will not get a clear winner on here. You will get the same old faces regurgitating the same comments every time the same question is asked. Best thing to do is see if you can try some first. I have 36's on a nomad and live in the West Midlands if you want to try them.
Personally its got to be the 36's for me.
Put a little bit of time into setting them up & they are night & day different to the pikes. Main difference is the extra stifness they offer which give confidence when just hooning through things off the brakes.
I have Pikes on another bike & loved them when they first came out, but since I've had the 36's on my Nomad I'm considering a change.
Would like to try the new Lyrics to see have they compare chassis wise to the 36's
Thanks for the replies.

Good shouts but not sure if the LBS will swap out for these. I'll ask.
Looks like the 36's are winning at the moment. 🙂
Cheers.
I may be biased, but the Ohlins kit is lovely.
36 has a fair few publicised reliability and performance issues, which goes against a lot of the glowing press reviews.
I would look at the Lyrik or the RFX.
If I had limitless choice for that sort of budget and requirement I'd probably go with a RS Yari (Lyric chassis with older tech damper) and upgrade to a Avalanche Damper, they're meant to be outstanding, but then I do like to have unusual stuff, it makes up for a lack of personality I think 😉
Total cost would be about £700 I think.
nice bike 😉 which colour you gone for? (make sure you get it invisiframed, worth its weight in gold!)
id personally go 36 - they feel way stiffer than the pikes did (over the stuff you/me ride , and if anything goes wrong with them warranty wise you'll be waiting only days instead of several weeks for sram/rockshox to sort you out, that in itself is enough to sway me
ive heard good things about the lyriks mind, but ive been put off rockshox for life really given last time they were fixed it took 7 weeks
the 36 are a little tricky to setup (given you ride the same stuff as me) but once you get them setup they are fit and forget
Old Lyriks are awesome on a Nomad once you dial them in right. Pikes are awesome and much easier to set up. New Lyriks are like the old but with Charger damper from Pikes. Awesome combined 😀
I'd go with new Lyriks (note, 650b/29er only, but you can upgrade an older 26 Lyrik to Charger damper).
Can't comment on Fox, other than from what I see of people running them there's a bit more faff setting up, and those running older Fox stuff at least always seemed to have issues. RS have been very reliable for me and very easy to service.
Just get whatever matches your rear shock.
You want front and rear to feel as similar as possible.
When people say the fox are a faff to set up i think it refers to the almost infinite amount of adjustment that can be made. The fork manufacturers cant win though. They gave us CTD (damping issues aside) and people moaned they wanted more adjustment. They give us dials for every setting plus tokens for air spring adjustment and now we moan that the suspension takes some time to set up.
Agree with the above.
I mixed a fox shock with RS forks and it felt odd. Fox/fox and RS/RS on similar bikes worked well though.
I'm fairly sure i've spent most of my riding time on mismatched suspension. Currently Lyrik & Float X2.
Feels more balanced than the turd of a 36 I had 🙂
Oscillate Wildly - Membernice bike which colour you gone for? (make sure you get it invisiframed, worth its weight in gold!)
Matte Carbon/Yellow, but finger is still hovering and I'm thinking hold out for the 2017 colours as had a black bike for years now. Defo getting it invisiframed though.
I'd definitely consider the new Lyrik.
Only had one ride on it but it's a serious cut above the Pike IMO.
You could always sell the Pike on and buy a Lyrik elsewhere. Mine was just over £600 from Wwinstanleys.
Matching front and rear suspension are you guys for real? 😀 what do people with Cane Creek shocks do to get their bikes to feel right?
I'm waiting on my new bike to be built and delivered. I specified a Pike 130 RTC3 on the front, with a Monarch RT3 DebonAir for the back. The shop got back to me though and told me I'd have to wait till the 2017 Pikes were available. I can't wait that long!!!!!!
It's been the best early summer in years, and even though I can't ride my mountain bike at the moment because of my slight snowboarding mishap in the winter, I could still sit in the garage and look at it. So c'mon SRAM boat, full steam ahead, I want my new fork delivered and my bike built!!
My old Five had a lovely Fox 36 Talas on the front and I'm looking forward to seeing if I can detect any difference between it and the Pike. I doubt it though. Been riding for nearly 25yrs now and still don't understand half the stuff you guys are on about here. 😉
C.
I paid £520 from a German eBay shop for my lyrik a few months ago.
It's a great fork,but haven't ridden the current 36 to offer a comparison.
Prior to the lyrik I did have a pike for a couple of years, and the lyrik is a significant step above the pike.
I have a Pike on my Nomad and it feels great, not tried the new 36/Lyrik, possibly more burly and better when at UK uplift venues, but I've never really felt that.
I previously had Fox 34s - 2014/2015 and they were shocking in comparison.
I'm happy with my Pike front, monarch + rear combo.

hmmm tricky, maybe worth waiting then, or at least wait up until then you may get a bit better deal on the black/orange one if a new ones imminent....I really like both the colours at present so either way will look great
if you could get a lyrik for 520ish then its a defo bargain, as you'll struggle get much/if any discount off fox 36's anywhere (maybe 10% max)
If you are considering a black yellow and orange nomad then the only consideration should be the fox with the matching orange stickers. Here's mine just after fitting the 36's.

Or, get a set of decals from slik for about 15 quid...
Or, go to the bother of matching the decals, and then throw some purple on there! 😆
Throw LOTS of purple on there you mean nobeer 😀
I'm only jealous andy, I reeeallly want a Nomad C
Definitely not a fan of this years colours - look naff to me. Much preferred last years stealthy graphics
I used to prefer my stealth one but it had to be changed under warranty and only the new model was available. I prefer the new one now I have it. Nice to have a bit of colour in your life.
Pre 36's as I was waiting for delivery

I have just gone from 2016 36 rc2 on my Orbea to the new lyrics. I just struggled to get them set up right and find RS forks a lot easier.
Matching front and rear suspension are you guys for real? what do people with Cane Creek shocks do to get their bikes to feel right?
I can only speak from experience. The Rockshox simply didn't suit the Fox shock. The DT Swiss that replaced them were great though so mix and match can work but don't take it as a given.
Matching front and rear suspension are you guys for real?
Probably, unless by matching they mean the colour 😆
That's the trouble with the internet, a good percentage of what's written on it is a load of crap!

As amazing as it seems I think those guys are being serious. Cane Creek shocks in the bin everyone. You with the 9k Specialised Demo with your none matching Öhlins rear shock and Boxxer World Cup, you know what to do....
I wen't for the Lyrik, first and foremost, its £300 cheaper than the 36.
Is it £300 less fork, some would say yes, as it has less adjustment. But for us mere mortals, is that extra adjustement of real benefit, as ultimately it could make getting the forks setup correctly a bit of a faff, when with less adjustment you could be 95% of the way there and get out and ride.
When you hear from a number of people that it feels harsh and has reliability issues, then really you doubt whether its worth taking the risk, when those same people report the Lyrik is better in those respects, I'd expect the 36 to be perfect!
The Lyrik feels a bit stiffer than the Pike, damping is more composed in the rough stuff, its a bit more supple off the top (bigger negative volume). Seems a perfect match for the X2 I have on the back of my Reign.
The thing about matching suspension, if these people are serious, is one of the most ill informed ridiculous statements I have ever read about anything ever.
Currently running a pike and either a cane creek inline or an xfusion vector coil shock.
Brand of suspension doesn't matter, OCDness aside, surely you mean the feel?
The new Santa Cruz Bronson is spec'd with a Pike and Float X for example.
Mixing suspension brands isn't the most common practice, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, and the Bronson's RockShox Pike and Fox Float X played well together out on the trail.

Yeah a Cane Creek (and presumably a Fox X2) can be twiddled to feel how you want.
Got a Pike and Monarch RT3 on another bike, feels a bit unbalanced, I'm sure a Cane Creek would be a better match.
Got both and Fox 36 wins all the way for me. Same for OH on his Nomad. Had no issues whatsoever with the three sets we have in this house. Cannot say the same for pikes unfortunately. If you're not an average size/weight rider, then you'll appreciate the increased tune ability of the 36s, assuming you're talking RC2 rather than FIT4.
The thing about matching suspension, if these people are serious, is one of the most ill informed ridiculous statements I have ever read about anything ever.
Of course I'm serious, from my experience. Why is it so hard to understand that some forks don't suit some shocks? There really are some know it all bell ends on here.
new lyriks is where my money would go and £600 from winstanleys currently
Mixing suspension brands is upsetting
It's hard to understand that different brands of suspension won't work well together because it's complete rubbish. If it didn't work for you then fine, but I suspect that's because of what you did, not the fork, shock, or its designers.
Can't just be as simple as just keeping it matching????
Lyriks, pikes, 36s are all really, really good, you are honestly splitting hairs that much, that deciding which to get becomes that insignificant, that deciding factors are things like matching what you have and colours.
Pikes are lighter, feel fine to me, lyriks and 36s feel like DH forks (that can be a good thing or simply overkill for the riding you actually do) and carry a weight penalty.
Well I really don't get the 'they have to match', forks and shock that is. I've been using Rockshox forks matched to a Fox shock for over 10 yrs and works fine for me. So, matching decals, Spring type and matching front and rear suspension aside 🙂
I ride all over Wales, The Peak, The Lakes, trips to Spain, Morocco and The Alps so not going to be overkill, well I don't think so anyway and I'm not one of those weight weenies that gives too much of a shite about weight of things.
After talking to the LBS, reading reviews, STW massiives input and speaking to one of my riding buddies (he has both) and the fact the LBS want the same uplift cost for either the Lryik or 36's, I'm opting for the 36's. 🙂
I figure if I don't get on with them it's going to be a cheaper option to buy Lryiks and swap out the 36's than the other way round and maybe the 36's will have a better resale value
Thanks all
🙂
It's hard to understand that different brands of suspension won't work well together because it's complete rubbish.
I'll bow to your superior knowledge of all shocks and all forks. Having had plenty of practise on plenty of different products over the years I must have simply got it wrong that time.
With your extensive knowledge of every shock and fork you should produce a MOMBAT style list. Many of us could benefit from your teaching.
For a good few years before Fox started with that CTD guff, the best combo for trail bikes was Fox shocks and RS forks.
Nobody's saying forks and shocks from the same manufacturer can't work well together, just that it's not a reason to expect them to do so.
Carlos you said 'swap out'
howsyourdad1 - MemberCarlos you said 'swap out'
swap out, change to, replace etc... not sure what you mean??
But yeah. If for whatever reason I don't get on with the 36's, take them off and sell them and buy and fit some Lryiks? The 36's have to be worth more 2nd hand over the Lryiks.
Or are you implying I'll be keeping the 36's once I've tried them??
