Want to get a new shorter stem so need to know the steerer tube diameter. They're 2005 Fox Talas. Can I assume they're 1.5 inch diameter or, given their age, is 1 and 1/8th more likely?
How can I measure the steerer tube diameter without removing the forks.
Is the diameter the internal or from outside to outside?

Very unliely to be 1.5, measure your top cap

My 05 talas are inch & 1/8th

Almost certainly 1.125", outside diameter, remove top cap and double check if you're really unsure. Straight 1.5" was the preserve of more burly bikes.
