Is the track open from Monday? I could justify the long trip if I could watch Sunday and ride Monday, that would make an excellent weekend.

I think the track reopened at midday on Monday last year so possibly!

Yes, the world cup downhill track reopens on Monday, probably about midday. Depends on how long it takes to clear it up.
The red route downhill is usually open from Monday morning, so you could have a run on that beforehand.

Is it worth paying for gondola tickets or is it as easy to just walk up the hill as far as you can be bothered?

The access roads only get you as high as the big road gap. Any further than that and it's boggy marsh. I'd get the gondola tickets. It's great to get to the top then walk down trackside as the riders go down.
