Looking at buying some new brakes and have seen Merlin have a good deal on the formula rx brakes.
Whats the difference between the rx and the r1 and how do both compare to the current shimano deore.
Cheers
Steve
Iirc, the R1 is a one-piece caliper and ti bolts, etc, compared to the RX, so lighter and, maybe a little more power. No idea how they'd compare to Deore.
Anyone been lucky enough to own some Rx and deore brakes and can tell me how they compare
thanks
steve
i have the RX's i can say they are the best brakes i have had but thats not hard considering i have had hayes sole and clarks s2's..... but the stopping power is great one thing is there is no adjustment to move the pads in or out to suit wear.... i have seen a few folk say drop the wheel keep pulling till the pads are together and then separate just enough for the disk and this does it... but i have not had to do this yet
Got the Rx on my full sus and Deores on my HT...
Completely different feel, the RX's power feels instant, where as the Deores have more modulation but you get a similar end result... You stop. Depends what you want. I find the RX win hands down for riding but if you factor in adjustability and maintenance then the Deores catch them up. Saying that though my Formulas haven't been bled in 2 and half years and are still working ok... If I had to choose one personally it'd be the Formulas, but either way you're getting a good brake.
My local Formula dude says they need to be rebled every year. I haven't done mine for over three. Just dropped some new pads in and, tbh, they're fab.
I have RX1 brakes on one of my bikes. I think the RX1 is RX caliper with R1 lever, and is an OEM product. I am very impressed with them. I had to swap them between bikes, which meant fitting longer cables and they were pretty easy to bled.
Lots of stopping power. As mentioned above they have a very small amount of modulation, you pull the brake and you stop. I have XTR brakes on my other bike, and power is about the same, just more lever travel on the XTR. From memory my Formula brakes are pretty similar in weight to the XTR.
I have them paired up with Sram shifters and the matchmaker clamps are very neat.
RX and R1 are totally different brakes tbh- some shared DNA. Castings instead of forgings, different lever design, piston dimensions are the same I think but the caliper is 2-piece. I'm a known Formula fanboi but I don't like the RX that much, it's a step back from the Oro if you ask me.
Got some R1Xs for the Soda as I can't afford R1s 🙁 And they're not quite as good, but really pretty close. Don't like the reach adjust though, doesn't go small enough for my girlyhands.
