I just put some new contis on the bike. Span the wheel and as usual I got that distinctive kink. I let the tyre down and manipulated the tyre on the rim and then reinflated. The kink is still there. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Is there a nack to fitting new tyres or are some just better than others. I hate it as the wheel is true, but the tyre makes it feel like my wheel is buckled.
I always leave them unfolded for a couple of days before fitting
I honest have no idea what you mean. 'Kink' in what way?
Get a track pump and stick 75psi in. That should give it it's the proper shape and seat it correctly. Then let air out to the desired pressure.
you have to pump them up pretty hard and they go *ping!* as they seat on the bead properly...
so long as the "kink" is more of a "wobble"
I was wondering whether a bit of water on the rim or washing up liquid and then does as you say and inflate to 75 psi and then let down to required pressure. Just worried that inflating to 75PSI may cause the tyre to blow off the rim ?
My last set of new tyres needed a good couple of rides to seat properly.

yeah - careful with Stans rims
I blew one off the rim at around 60psi - ruining the tyre & leaving the wheel needing re-truing
not to mention a ringing in my ears for a few hours ๐
Inflate them to about 10psi. Then disconnect the pump, pick up the wheel and make sure that the bead is evenly seated; there should be a ridged band visible just next to the rim. When the tyre is only at 10psi you can pull it about to make sure that it's evenly visible all the way round - do both sides, check, check again then reattach the pump and inflate as normal.
You can always pump up to stupidly high pressures, but if the tyre is badly seated there is a risk this will blow the tyre off the rim and howitzer your tube. And it makes a _really_ loud bang, which is fun unless you're standing right next to it.

Great post. I'm relatively new to MTB riding and never had the problem with 700c tyres. I thought that I'd bucked my wheel and riding at speed, the wheel wobbled and rattled as if it was oval not round. Also a strange "on-off" feel when braking too. After lots of head scratching, I'd ruled out buckled wheel and narrowed it down to poorly seated tyre. Is this common? I've tried manipulating the tyre into the rim but it always seems to "unseat" itself. Haven't tried the 60psi method yet, though......

The problem might be that there isn't enough room for the tyre to seat itself properly. Rims tapes really make a big difference. Otherwise try the washing up liquid and as much pressure as you dare trick.
try a squirt of gt85 or somthing like that at the offending area then pump up again.Check the rim tape that it ss not holding the tyre back too
Great advice. I think that may well be the problem. Thanks very much. I'll try that.
