Found that my Hope pro II axle had snapped so got a new one and replaced it along with the pawl springs that were also knackered. All seemed fine until i rode it round the garden and the wheel wouldn't spin freely when not pedalling, well it would spin but not without the pedals going round as well if I stopped the pedals the chain would gather up.

What could I have done wrong? If I loosen off the maxle a bit it all works fine, but then it seems like the maxle isn't tight enough and before I 'fixed' the axle i could tighten up the maxle pretty tight.

I used this axle http://www.evanscycles.com/products/hope/pro-2-rear-x12-thru-conversion-kit-ec062866#answers

Any thoughts appreciated.

Have you left out the spacer between the drive side bearing and the freehub body?

It's only maybe 2mm wide.

Everything seemed to push together again properly. I'll take it apart again and have a look tonight, cheers.

unless that seal on the freehub is clicked into place it will never turn freely.

Another vote for the drive seal. I fell victim to this one

Yep, my first two thoughts on reading the title were
1, freehub seal
2, freehub washer.

On my bolt-up I get frerhub drag when the driveside is tight. This is due to it being very slightly bent. Hope it's not that.

Thru axle does seem a bit more of a tight fit with the new hope axle, maybe it is bent. Bugger, better check that as well!!

Did you fit a steel axle out of curiosity?

Ask as the alloy one is bound to snap again. Hope will supply a steel one if you order via a lbs that deals with hope.

It's the non evo hub, yeah?

Yeah non evo hub, and i just bought a replacement from Evans. Alu one though. Wheel came on bike I got from a mate so didn't think about going to hope. If/when it goes again i'll drop into the LBS or give hope a call.

Got a QR Hope Bulb rear on my HT which has been faultless for years, this is the first time I've had a rear thru axle.

It was the freehub washer,

It's always the freehub washer.

If it happens again, with the breakage, call Hope- they know the part isn't strong enough so you'll get a no fuss replacement, they never asked me for proof of purchase or anything. (they actually sent me 2, the last time, "for next time it happens").
