Think about doing first build. At this stage not even sure whether to go for a hardtail or full susser.
Just wondered what items people would consider as buying new only for a build, if anything.
Not after particular product recommendations just in principle.
Cheers for any feedback (useful or otherwise)
surely new everything is best?
those iron horse bootlegs at crc look tremendous for the money.
I've always bought new headsets and bottom brackets, cassettes and chains. Apart from that I'm happy with second hand if I can get roughly what I want.
For some reason I've always steared clear of used bars or seatposts. I don't know why though 😕
Apart from that I'd consider anything else as long as it was in good nick.
Much as big dummy says. I have built up two bikes in this way and am perfectly happy with secondhand components for most stuff but not for anything with a bearing.
My FS is all 2nd hand barring grips, stem, bars, chain, cassette and cables. All from the forums too. The BB is sounding a bit ropey after a year but for crankset for £30 I wasn't too worried.
Just finished my first build. Frame and forks new, most of the rest of the stuff used on mine. Pretty much a-okay, although in retrospect I should have bought new rings for the crank, chain and cassette, as the used ones are a bit worn (when I tried to put on a new chain, it didn't go well).
Otherwise, the brakes weren't put together properly (hose attachment piece), but that was a pretty easy fix at my LBS.
If doing it all again, I'd definitely buy all the static stuff off the classifieds.

And if I had a money tree that would be the course I'd take. Also like the idea of doing a build rather than off the peg.
I was thinking as above - anything with bearings or seals probably best to get new.
If full susser perhaps the shock as well??
mrben100 do your sums, if your on a budget, watch the classifieds see how much stuff goes for, anything with a decent spec is going to cost you a lot in the long run you will probably find the new bike is cheaper than building it yourself..
Bare in mind anything mint condition is expensive, and its always a shame to build it up and its scruffy to look at.
That said I just built this with a decent spec for £420 but its all 2nd hand and looks it, only new thing was cables!

But I built the wife a bike last year and wanted it mint and the cost spiraled for not much spec, this also cost about £400 and a bit, this got knicked 2 weeks later along with my titanium wonder bike, so I know how your feeling about now. Sorry.
