Having recently bought a SC Stigmata I have been forced to go back on my 'it's either one or the other (by that I mean MTB/Road)' statement... Its an incredibly capable machine. However a few tweaks are required to make it less hair raising after the slightly rushed initial build highlighted improvement areas based on what I'm looking from it to do. Namely... Dropper (PNW), Wider bar (PNW) and now I'm on the hunt for tyres. I need a fast rolling mini mtb tyre ideally, it needs to have plenty of bite for steep climbing and corner on rails. Oh and light and durable😆 Size wise I'd like to stay around the 45/47mm mark as to not compromise clearance too much... What's everyone's reccomndations? Thanks

Lol at the mtb suggestion... Mtb geometry on tarmac should be banned 😆

Hutchinson Tundra has been mentioned... Anyone running these?

Not a bad idea, although I've heard mixed vibes on inserts. The ballache of set up and need changing out, might be better getting a more durable carcass and refining line choice ☺️

I've just installed some (into my tyre of choice, the Vittoria Terreno).

Can't say I'm all that impressed or blown away by them, I started another thread on it somewhere. I might keep them just to protect the rims on bigger burlier rides (I've dinged rims twice now) but my first impression was, if anything, a slight worsening of ride quality.

On the plus side though, they made the tubeless install a bit easier actually, I think the insert held the tyre closer to the rim bed so I only needed a few puffs with a standard track pump to seal, win!

Is this on 650b or 700c?

650b Nanos aren't in TCS flavour, they'll go up tubeless but are a bit fragile.

If you're talking 650b then WTB Senderos have to be worth a look.

If 700c then WTB Riddler/Raddler in however beefy a carcass you can source/justify.

The closest to a Nano I can find in 650 size is the Teravail Rutland. Senderos are a good but more chunky than that so might handle softer terrain better, but likely at an increase in rolling resistance?

Would agree if there were more tyre options, tried inserts on my enduro bike and didn't get on with them.

I us my gravel bike as an XC mtb (700x42 Resolutes) and was having to run super high psi. Could still bottom the tyres out and feel them roll when cornering, frequently dented the rims too. Tried some other tyres but didn't get on with them so went for inserts.

Positives - able to drop about 10psi, much more confident in the tyres. Feels much more supportive especially cornering. Easy to fit, they made getting the tyres to seat much easier too. Not noticed the extra weight.

Negatives - Uses more sealant. If you get a flat and need a tube you've a messy bit of foam to get home. Hasn't happened to me in a few thousand km, would probably stash it in a bush and pick it up another day.

I've not bothered changing them out, still seem in good condition when checked.

I have the same quest at the moment. Pirelli Cinturato seem to be well regarded but annoyingly I can't locate 45c with the classic sidewall in time for this weekend.

I've given up on these, I had my heart set on them but they are hens teeth in the UK atm. Also a lot heavier than claimed when compared to other options.

I've tried some budget foam noodle jobs (ratbite maybe?), they worked fine but no longer exist. Now on the Rimpacts, nicer product but only for tyres/rims up to to 45/25mm. Would just go for whatever's sensible money.

Riddler - roll well, genuinely terrifying in the wet
Resolute - good all rounder, reassuringly average at everything
Sendero - good in soft conditions, roll better than they look, turn wet rock into ice

I fancy trying these in 700x50 next...

Gravel is supposed to be fast and sketchy 😎

Get some Vittoria Terreno Dry, go fast, go sideways occasionally, PB local road climbs on them, and just go a bit slower for the small amount of surfaces they're not actually surprisingly good at (or take your MTB for those rides).

They come in a 45 now as well, no sooner than I've committed to a bike that can only take 40s 😭😭

Pirelli Cinturano M would be my recommendation - mine are unpunctured after nearly 2 years of riding mainly uncompromisingly chunky gravel

I swap between Resolutes for rougher terrain, and Schwalbe G-One Speeds (35mmm) for more tarmac focussed stuff. The Resoultes are miles better on rocks, mud, roots, etc... but it always seems a shame to use them on tarmac (From a wear and speed perspective).

Rutlands roll surprisingly well - I've been a fan of them (in 650x47). Only two criticisms are that they seem to wear quite quickly and that I feel they need more air pressure in than I'd like. Too low and they're quite squirmy on (hardpack) corners - so you'll lose some plushness with higher psi.

I'm currently running Cinturato M in 650x50. They also roll well, probably not as much grip as the Rutlands, but can run lower pressures for cush.

Weirdly (and probably counter to what others suggest...) I found Terrano Drys draggy, with no grip benefit. 🤷. If you want them in 650*47 (in reality they come up at about 50 on my 23mm internal rims) I've a pair you can have for postage...
