Right ok

I commute to work - the initial section of my ride is farmtracks and don't encounter anyone.

But

The last 4 miles is along a narrow canal towpath...and .....shock horror people blocking the way.

I don't want to ruin the aesthetics of my bike with a bell :^)

So is there anything I can use that is small and effective ( I just know that this post is going to get hijacked and riddiculed)....

I use "Hello". It seems to work for me.

Choose another route, then!!

WTF is wrong with a little bell? It's polite and considerate, to use one, I think. People seem to respond quite positively, to my little ping bell.

my experience of bells is equivocal - if you're not on the street, many people will look around confusedly expecting the angel Gabriel to appear from the sky, jump a mile in panic, or just ignore their sudden onset tinnitus...

Word of warning though, I once leaned over the handlebars to undo the front quick release and leant on the button with my ear right next to the horn...
I heard bells for quite a while after that.
