I thought it would be worth a mention that the new "Cityconnect" project now has a new website which details the project and it's plans. It also has facebook and twitter feed. It's still early days, the project has been set up to "deliver a programme of cycle improvements in the Leeds City Region".

In particular:
* Create a new (I'm guessing roadside) cycle "superhighway" between Leeds and Bradford
* Improve the cycle path along the canal between Leeds and Shipley.
* Future expansion to other towns surrounding Leeds

It is still early days and the consultation starts soon. I thought it would be worth mentioning because the more local cyclists that get involved the better the results could be.

Proposed route of superhighway/cyclepath improvements:

It looks pretty good, if only I lived in West Leeds, I could have a choice of two routes to Leeds!

I agree with you both ๐Ÿ™‚ I'm planning on moving house soon so may influence that a bit. I'd still rather ride the canal in than roadside cyclepaths.

It will be interesting to see what they propose for the roadside cycle paths.

Improve the cycle path along the canal between Leeds and Shipley.

In what way does it need improving?

I understood the canal was to be tarmacked from Leeds to Shipley.
This would be gopping and would lead to bikers traveling faster more conflict with walkers ?

the canal is smooth tarmac to kirkstall brige, then unmade all the way to Shipley. on the tarmac smooth section into leeds, some idiots teararse along it like a race track.

It doesn't say for now but I think it's worth keeping an eye on in case you want to have your say. Off the top of my head I would say some improvements to the surface and the drainage, wider sections to allow walkers and cyclists to pass easily, and better lit sections where it can be a bit gloomy/intmidating at night. My main problem on that route is people getting in a right strop with you if you do ring your bell but also conversely if you don't, not sure what can be done about that.

apparently a cyclist fell into the canal the other day

someone was coming the other way with a set of those very bright lights we all love - the first cyclist couldnt see the path and subsequently cycled into the canal

That's what I thought, most of it is tarmac or aggregate, isn't it?
keighley to Skipton all needs sorting tho, it's like the friggin Somme in places.

It's alreet. Maybe the bit just before Silsden could do with a muck-out, though.

More interesting to see the proposed infrastructure to be developed within 10 years (at about the 6th page in the pdf version of the funding bid document) here:

Best of luck to them. I really hope proper stuff gets achieved out of it. The brochure's a bit slick for me though ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's dreadful. Lodge Hill bridge to Farnhill and then Bradley to Skipton are horrible, rutted mudfests at the moment.

Email this new lot then with your comments / observations.

Will be interesting to see what they do in response. Feedback on the state of the network from the users should be valuable to them, so long as you don't present it as the ravings of a frothing-mouthed-loon ๐Ÿ˜‰

oh please leave the canal alone, doesn't need lighting, doesn't need widening.

If person on bike couldn't see why didn't they stop??

Yeah I think this will only go as far as Shipley, as you say it is annoying because after that it gets worse anyway. I recall around Silsden it is just muddy path with no real aggregate/hardcore or anything.

Completely agree, although frothing-mouthed-loons deserve an opinion too.
