[Closed] External bearing to accommodate tapered steerer in 44mm HT...

Following on from discovering I can't use the front hub I'd intended for my old 26er rebuild, I'm exploring possibilities before giving up and buying a Hope front hub ๐Ÿ™‚

The fork that's present needs a 20mm axle. This is a bit limiting.

The frame is intended for 140mm and 44mm HT with semi-integrated bearings. I've been running 150mm without questioning it. I know that if I replace the lower bearing cup with an external 1.5" I can fit a tapered steerer. What I don't remember is how much that affects effective stack. Am I right thinking that it's around +10mm? So for the 150mm feel I've got now I'd want a 140mm fork?

Secondly, If I was to use a 27.5/650b fork. How does that affect the numbers? Genuinely never looked at that before although I believe it's been done to death years ago...

Thats what mine was, I had to remove a 10mm spacer below the stem to maintain the position of the bars (I was using the same forks).

Cool, ta! So, that's that bit settled no spacers, so it's coming out of the travel - anyone want to weigh in with expected effect of 27.5 forks on the situation? TBF, widening the search to 15mm axle tapered 26" forks gives me a reasonable field anyway, but just covering all bases ...

When I put 650b forks on my 26" i think the fork was 10mm longer at a given travel. Fork at 150mm was the same length as the frame quoted for the max length of a 160mm fork.

Cool, so putting the two together, 130mm of 650b fork plus external cup ought to leave my geo roughly where it is at 150, just with less travel. Definitely something to think about! ๐Ÿ˜€

I thought a 44mm head tube allowed you to run tapered or even 1.5 straight steerer forks with an integrated or semi integrated headset .

Not really.

due to the reduction in fork travel geometry at sag won't be exactly the same as before.
Due to the longer axle offset 650b forks have trail won't be the same. (steering will become a little quicker and slightly less stable at speed)

Whether you'll like, dislike or even notice these changes is another matter entirely but you might as well at least know the facts.
