Searching for a few bits and pieces on ebay.. Am I overly optimistic about finding a bargain or are folks that clueless that they have no idea of the likes of crc etc.

105 mechs are selling for over 20 quid, plus a fiver to post. You can get one new delivered for 30 quid online. I just lost out on a battered old carbon Easton ea 90 post that with delivery sold for 40 quid.. And a 105 chainset that went for 70. Currently looking at an s works carbon post.. But it's 50 quid delivered and 7 years old. And that seems the going rate.

Sure the rrp of kit is usually far more, but a quick Google often gets you brand new kit delivered for free for a few quid more.

So where is best for finding cheap kit for road bikes.. The classifieds on here are great for mtb but not much roadie stuff available, and hardly anyone uses the bike radar classifieds.

Fairly standard for eBay, but there are bargains to be had.  I prefer newly listed things with best offer than ending soonest under auction.

Just the way it is on eBay with popular kit. Bargains can be had on still on odd/less popular stuff, but we're also in peak season for cycling with a great summer so bits are in demand.

I have often thought the same. I don't understand people buying second hand at a price marginally less than brand new. No return, no warranty for slightly less money - makes no sense

Indeed . It's nuts.

Prices always seem a bargain until 2 min before the auction closes and then the price goes up exponentialy.

I've bought loads of stuff on ebay before, but it's non cycling related retro items. I think I'll avoid in future and stick to crc.

Shhh, I’m making a fortune on there at the moment.

Got a 105 mech I’m gonna stick on tomorrow as well 🙂

Power to the people, screw shops they are just trying to rip you off, why would you give them your money when nice honest ebayer will look after you

I got a lightly used Sram Eagle 32t boost chainring for a £1 so there are still bargains.

I think as a Buyer its to do with money back guarantee/Very safe to buy, as a seller its the Fees on selling and posting and Pay Pal and Packaging that makes some items look expensive.

Bargains are hard to come by if you ask me. I bought some Rockshox Paragon solo air Gold rl lightly used for £20, I think because they listed it wrong. That's the only bargain I've bought in 10 + years

Jonnyboi, if its a 5800 band on front mech or a medium cage 11 speed rear then I'll save you the hassle if you can do a good price. Obviously I've kind of shot myself in the foot here by saying you will make far more on ebay.  But at least you will definitely get paid.. 😉

It’s the (probably) deeply unpopular short cage, sorry!

I assume most of the eBay second hand bike components have lived life to the full .... and are always over priced.

However, wheels seems to be outside of this ( as long as you are careful)

We've had some shocking eBay purchases brought into the shop. People buy a "bargain" and then are shocked they have to spend money to make the things work. This happens a lot with wheels. Your carbon rimmed wheelset is cheap until you realise 6 sets of bearings need replacing.

Me too.  eBay is great, I can buy stiff from cheap places online and then if I fancy changing it I sell it on eBay for small loss.  Don't know what I would do without eBay (maybe stop serial buying would be a good start!)

Are you still looking for a 105 chainset?

Got a compact 5800 with 172.5 crankarms I was gonna get round to selling, a fair bit cheaper than £70.

Message me if that's suitable.

Yeah ebay is good for selling. I find it a lot less hassle than the classifieds here. No long and tedious email chain about condition and price. There is a discount culture on STW that means whatever price advertised people expect a discount. I have had stuff for sale here where I have given up after silly email chains, put it on ebay and sold it quickly for more than enough to cover fees.

On ebay it either sells or it doesnt. If the buyer isnt happy it comes back (although cant remember last time that happened to me). Prices are higher to reflect fees.

Buying from Ebay I agree with Daffy. Auction prices are daft. Only way to buy is newly listed best offer items.

I am surprised too, as I mentioned on the facebook classifieds thread, I've been having a tidy up recently and stuck about 30 items on ebay with a 99p start price and they have all sold for good money, way more than I would have paid for them.

The only problem is the stupid person/question tax you get from selling on selling on ebay.

What size is the 143mm saddle that you have for sale?

Is the black size medium cycling jersey you have for sale blue or black?

When bidding is at £20, still with a few days to run, a message saying I'll give you £10 and can collect today

Multiple variations of "Wots yr bst price"

And my best one is "can you please courier the wheelset for free, XX retailer give free postage". When I pointed out that it wasn't free, it is worked into the price and you pay one way or the other, even if you don't see it. He replied back and was genuinely surprised as he thought ebay paid for the postage if you selected the free option...

To be fair I've sold a lot of stuff that way.  We list quite a bit of professional camera gear on ebay and quite often let the auction run but sell an identical item for 15% less (ebay fees) to people asking questions.

Obviously different if you've only got 1 item at a time and don't need to sell a lot of stuff.

Agree with that - just sold a 105 chain set where the bidding went over £40, with a £35.00 buy it now price... people seem to lose the plot when bidding on ebay!

I listed some really crappy tektro disc brakes for 99p and got 20 quid. listed them as spares only(snapped lever, leaking) I would have been happy with 99p

I got some brand new Raceface Next R carbon cranks for £150 yesterday. And the other day I got some brand new Sun Mulefut tubeless Fat wheels and Bonty tyres for £134.

I got the feeling these might be good deals....?

They were both Buy it now with offer...the auctions are silly (unless you are selling!!)

"I got some brand new Raceface Next R carbon cranks for £150 yesterday"

Did you get some good epoxy too? 😉

I like both buying and selling on here to be honest, pinkbike occasionally too. Though selling can need some patience on here....

As there are serial bike upgraders on STW you can get some really good kit at reasonable prices. Never had a problem with a purchase from here either.

I got a similar question a few weeks back.  I wrote back and asked what advantage that would be to me and they seemed to think me getting less money a few days earlier was some sort of advantage.  They then followed up with question on whether item was broken so I blocked them.  He then got very upset when he tried to bid at last minute and couldn't.  I do like the block feature for people who ask stupid questions as they are likely to be stupid winners if you let them win.

This. Had a guy make asking questions and making an offer on some wheels I was selling (BIN) I politely refused. He then sent another offer £30 less than the first! I wondered if it was some sort of strategy buying thing I hadn't heard about....? Then blocked him.

I have had a few of these results over the years. I put some Juicy 7s on which were in just about working condition (no rotors) but really needed a piston service on both calipers; the parts alone were gonna be almost as much as buying a set of SLX from Merlin, so that's what I did.
I stuck the Juicy 7s on for 99p and explained explicitly what condition they were in & that while usable I really recommended a full piston service on both ends.
Ended up selling them for over £40.

Also sold a cheap sq taper crankset from my first road bike, as Merlin were doing Sora for something stupid like £36 which I'd bought.
The sq taper crank went on ebay for something like a fiver & ended up selling for over £60 to some bloke who wanted it for his wife's touring bike.

While mooching on ebay the other day I put in "2010 Stumpjumper FSR" seeing as that's what I've got, just to see what came up. Some bloke is trying  to sell the carbon framed one (not the full S-works) for £2700 - an 8yr old 26er! The mind boggles..... Here

Buy it or walk away. It's really simple or are we back on the policing the classifieds again?

Another one of my items sold yesterday evening, £5 less than brand new. I was laughing, until I saw how much paypal and ebay take.

In fairness to him, I can kinda see where he's coming from in that regard. They hardly sold any of the carbon versions like this; I'm not even sure it was available in the UK.
I got mine as a warranty replacement (lacquer peeling off the silver alloy frame, so Spesh replaced it with the carbon), but it's got dark red highlights rather than white - I've only ever seen one other person with the same colour scheme as mine (and his was a warranty replacement too for the same reason).
It does stand out - at events like the 24:12 I often see people giving it a quizzical look, although maybe that's more to do with the fact that they're actually wondering why the hell I'm on a 26er with a triple ring still.... 🙂

The Specialized branding on it is not really obvious, and I think it does get second glances because of the carbon weave in the top layer....

But, yeah - £2700 is hilarious!

Anyone that sells stuff used on ebay deserves every penny they get, for having to put up with the rampant buffoonery that buyers show on a regular basis.

I don't have a problem with the fees.  They are no higher (in fact they are lower) than auction fees and even after taking off the fees you will still get more money for your item than if your sold it some other way.

I also buy a lot of stuff from eBay as well as selling but I typically only buy new stuff from 'shops'   I often find better prices than other online sites and there is a LOT more of a chance they actually have the item in stock if they are listing it.

This says rather too much about why certain people buy Santa Cruz.  Don't make the mistake of thinking they are exclusive, they really aren't.

Disclaimer: Currently have both a Specialized and a Santa Cruz in my garage

Agreed, don't get me wrong I know the fees and still chose to sell my stuff. It just reduced my level of smugness at selling 2nd hand stuff for almost new prices when I saw the running total I owe ebay from my recent sales.

currently watching a torque wrench on ebay, new but in damaged packaging.   it is now £5 more expensive than buying the same one from chain reaction AND there's £2.99 delivery. AND it still has three hours to go

People are dumb.

I think it's great for selling. Probably the largest used market in the country so great exposure for my old tat. Equally when they have what can be up to 20% off everything (very rare) then the prices can be unbeatable.

It has it's place but so does Gumtree. In fact I sold a car on eBay for less than a guy had offered when he came round to look at it after seeing it on Gumtree. Unfortunately a bid had only just been placed on eBay by that point. I apologised but told him he could still place a bid on eBay if he wanted to. I have quite strict bidder rules to avoid having to deal with tw*ts. He didn't win the bid so maybe he had poor feedback or had a few non payments.

I was still happy the old banger had sold, to somebody that drove 300 miles to collect it!

Regarding idiots on eBay - my gf sold a couple of things recently - one of them a woman bought then it didn't fit her so she sent it back saying it wasn't the size it was listed as (it was - not our fault she'd been at the pies & it was too small) Then more recently she sold a pair of shorts - since the previous issue she changed her account settings to say that she doesn't accept returns.

The person she sold them to messaged her to say that zips were broken (they weren't) & that they wanted their money back. She refused, got in touch with eBay, they said that's fine. He then returned them, she ignored his message. He then sent threatening messages about refunding his money. She contacted eBay again they said just keep hold of the money so she did.

He still messages her daily. He's under investigation by eBay as apparently he does this loads, has been banned from bidding on anymore of her items & will be unable to contact her after 60 days from the auction finish.

you can get great bargains on eBay but I tend to buy stuff that I don't need right away so I can wait for the deal to turn up, if you need something right away it's not so good.

Best buys this year were some new un-used fulcrum racing 5 lg wheels for £140 and a second hand kinesis racelight full bike with 105 for £275. I sold the wheels and chainset off the kinesis for £90 on ebay.  So all in I have a kinesis racelight with 10 speed 105 and brand new fulcrum wheels  at a total cost £325, which is less than the cost of the frameset new!
