[#10184902]

Recently changed main bike so I stripped down my trusty Solaris to free up some of its parts.

The Solaris has a dink in the downtube, how much would this of dented the value? I'm fairly sure it's a MK1 in medium if that helps? It's a used mountain bike so has plenty of chips etc.

Thanks in advance.

That looks quite bad.

I'd ride it. Not sure I'd buy it.

I’d happily ride that too.  I’d pass it on for free. So in my view it’s lost 100% of its value.

I'd think of it as adding character to an otherwise lacklustre frame.

I'd buy it, but I'd not expect to part with much money for it, aside from being priced to move, why else would someone buy it?

Potential buyers will be looking to either ignore it and not be too upset when it folds after 6 months, slap some body filler in and make a cosmetic "repair", actually throw some money in and get a repair done or just chop it up...

£20 maybe?

I've still got and old 456 in the garage I payed £30 for with a bent mech hanger a few years ago, intending to chop it up for a project, instead I eventually just straightened the hanger with an adjustable and used it for a bit. Most damaged things still have some value to someone, somewhere...

That will be fine

Ive had bmx's with bigger dents in that area and they lasted years and were heavily abused

If you want to get it repaired then get the dent filled with braze, sand it down and repaint

If your selling it on as it is then id expect to get £20-£30 less than the normal going price

I've had no worries riding it, it's not been babied since I noticed it and I haven't died!

I might just build it back up/swap the parts over from my Unit.

I was hoping to lose around a ⅓ of the market value at most but hey how, that's mountain biking!

Thinking about it I've nothing to lose trying to push/pull the dink out, other than a bit of paint!

You’d be able to roll some of that out but the actual dent looks quite sharp edged (if you know what I mean) so you’d not get that out.

Roll it out, fill with silver solder and repaint. Or else, just keep on riding it.

Disagree (sorry) with the above post, surely a BMX would have thicker tubing and as such could stand more abuse regardless of a dent.

That’s quite a bad dent, and given proximity to bottom bracket I’d be a bit concerned about it. Not sure it has that much value, maybe £30 if someone wants to risk it. As others said if possibly ride it but wouldn’t buy it.

As some have said above, I’d ride it without a second thought, I’d probably not buy it though unless it was to try that particular bike out to see if I wanted one, and then I’d not pay more than £30 for it.

I'd leave it be - you'll probably stress / weaken the tubing more by attempting to bash/pull it out. I'd have no worries riding it, but I wouldn't pay more than £25-30 if I was going to buy it.

Put a sticker over it, preferably one that says "ouch" and itllbe fixed.

Seriously I'd be worried about the "fold/crease" bit in the middle of that. That's the place that could split .

I wouldnt be bothered by that at all personally. They always look much worse than they are. I bought a Sherpa off here discounted for a dent in the top tube and have put 1500kms on it with no issue.

Given how sought after Solaris are, think if you waited until after the school holidays and stuck it on ebay as a 10 day auction finishing Sunday night with clear description you would get £100 for it.

I had a dent in my FlareMax about there. It was a lot smaller tho. I took loads of pics and sent it to Cy to get his view. Which was ‘should be fine, keep an eye on it’. No issues for the next year and when I sold it, took a couple of hundred quid off the selling price with full disclosure!

That one looks a lot bigger. Cy did say the FlareMax had a lot of metal near the BB but I’d definitely get Cotic’s opinion….

I'd say it's worth £70ish.

The advantage of steel is that it can be repaired.

Bob Jackson replaced the dented top tube of my lugged road bike. Good as new.

Would not go to the trouble of buying and building that up but if mine pre dent would have happily ridden it until it broke ( or didn’t). Odd I know but wouldn’t take it off you for free.

More than you think. Stick it on eBay on a weekend evening auction with a 99p start, it'll go for anything upto 100 quid or more.

Most modern bmx frames dont have thick top and down tube tubing, most frames weigh between 4.5-5lbs

The smaller diameter the tube the stronger it will be

That dent is ovalized and there is no creasing so id be happy to ride that (ridden worse) easy to keep an eye on too

Thanks for the replies. I have no issue with riding the frame myself, it's not going to fold from that.

I can't access the dent from behind so won't be pushing it out. I thought about using the students gun and pulling the dink out but realistically it'll be left a smaller dent and a bare patch.

I'll either stick on eBay or strip my Unit down as that's running geared at the moment for child carrying duties. Just a pain if/when I go back to single speed.
