Recently moved to Somerset and would be keen to start doing some MTB in the area. Does anyone mind a slow newbie tagging along?
Try popping into Ralph Colemans or King's cycles. I think they both still have groups that go out onto the Quantocks.
Ralphies don't have any organised group MTB rides at the moment (that I know of), but knottie's Wednesday evening rides may suit you, I'm sure he'll be along any minute. Otherwise put out a call when you're planning to go out and I'm sure someone will guide you around.
I'm arranging an STW forum outing on the Mendips on 15th Aug. This thread:

Last year about 30 friendly people turned up and we had a splendid day of pootling around fun and varied trails at a sociable pace. I expect the same this year. You would be made very welcome and will get to know some of your new local trails and local riders.

Depends where in Somerset you are.
Thanks for tolerating my 'whats that in the bushes' forays this morning Buzz. Next time we'll just ride.
No worries I like exploring bushes for trail secrets
by my reckoning we found two new complete and worthwhile segments and another ripe for development. Sorry I was a bit slow
South Somerset/Quantocks/ Blackdowns area. ralph Coleman's recommended this site.

from the googlie eyes I'm guessing I might need to put the seat down a bit to go down there!
Give bad ass bikes a ring, Box (the owner) is a very knowledgable and helpful bloke (and ****ing nutter on a bike).
I lead a group most wednesdays evenings on the Qs starting at six ish from Crowcombe top carpark.(maybe not next week though). Easy pace for about 2-2.5hrs.
