I know there have been a lot of posts on these so apologies for this but...

I'm going to order the 'bastid' handlebar light.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25149

But also want one of the torches to helmet mount.
Can't decide between
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12325
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16092
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12060

Also extra batteries - such a choice on DX
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12397
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19624

Would welcome any salient comments or other options from you knowledge-able gents and gals...

If i were you i would just buy the helmet mounted version of the real bike light. same output, 3x the run time of a torch, smaller, lighter, better.

Batteries - definitely go for the higher capacity ones (larger mAh). I'm unsure whether the 'protection' offered by some is necessary.

Anyway, ditch your suggestions and go for either
2500 mAh http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19770 $6.75
or protected 2500 mAh http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5790 for $8.18

As for torches -

lighter is good for helmet mounting
regulated circuitry will/should give you a more stable light output and burn time
2 modes will be ample for having to reach up and fiddle with your helmet light, especially if you have more control over a handlebar light.

This is all IMHO though, hope if provides some help.

You mean this?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489

Looks the same but details say
"Digital Regulated 1000mA Current Output"
whereas for the bar mounted version
"Digital Regulated 2400mA Current Output"

This
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12325 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12060 are the same thing but one has more modes, I reckon the later is the better of the two (I have one of these) as the medium is very useful and the low far too low.

I also have one of these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16092 and believe the output is 'slightly' better, though it would be hard to tell on a blind test. Some ppl can't get over the 5 modes, but once you know the sequence it's easy enough to use.
As for batteries, I'm no expert but I bought these for mine last year, for the extra dollar, I'd buy the protected version:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5790

Be-aware that loaded up these torches weigh just under 200g's, and some ppl don't get on with that much weight up top. [EDIT: As per Rob] Have you considered one of these (helmet mount version of your bar mounted torch):
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489
When you consider you going to have to buy a torch, betteries & a charger - would one of these be more cost effective.

Johnny,

Have you managed to suss out the difference re: the regulated current output of the bar mounted version versus the helmet mounted version?

Nope.
They look the same so how can one put out 1A and the other 2.4A and yet both be quoted as 900 lumens ?
Assumed it's a mistake? 😕

P.S Thanks for all the replies so far. 😀

Just been on the DX website and found this in the comments:

"sku.25149
Emitter Brand/Type: Seoul Semiconductors SSC
Emitter BIN: P7-C-SXO

sku.29489
Emitter Brand/Type: Cree
Emitter BIN: SSC-P7-C-SXO

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Can you also bar mount the helmet version of this light or buy the helmet mount separately?

yes you can - only thing that is different is that you get a helmet mount

as the bar mounted and helmet mounted share the same battery pack - surely if the output was different the bar mounted one would have sub 50% of the runtime of the helmet mounted one

Hi Guys,
I have just stumbled across this thread when looking for a new bike light?
What are these DX lights, I hadn't heard of them before. Are they any good??
Are there any UK suppliers??

Cheers

1) Very cheap (£50) 900 Lumen LED lights.
2) Yes for the price.
3) Some people are selling them via ebay and other places but usually adding £30-40 to the £50 it would cost you to order them from DX. The main problem with ordering from DX is the time the lights can take to arrive.

Nudge..

I just read that as them both being Seul Semiconductors (SSC) P7-C-SXO emitters. Phrased differently but in effect the same thing?

Still not sure what I want now.
Perhaps the Magicshine unit on the helmet and a torch on the bars. The exact reverse to what I was expecting to do.

P.S. Selection of suitable helmet mounts for the Magicshine lights??

The helmet one is the same but with a helmet mount and some minor circuity differences.

sku 25149 is the bar mounted version.
sku 29489 looks like the same light but with a helmet mount instead of the suitable sized rubber O-Rings to bar mount it.

There are slight differences in the light description though, which makes one wonder if they are the same light, though they surely look the same, with the same claimed output & run time.

The Magicshine 808 here looks like the same thing.

Thanks Jamie for the reply,
Do you know how long these lights take to deliver??

I started to read a couple of posts on the DX website - not all good news, most posts had some problem or another - well for £50 I am just gonna give it a go!!!

Cheers

Remember nige people usually only post to complain, bit like STW 😉 . I would imagine there will be many more happy customers.

Jim there excellent, as bright if not brighter than most std HID's light on the market and comparable to the majority of LED systems available.
.
Yes the top LED systems like the Hope LED 4, Lumicycle 850 or Lupine Betty LED lights are brighter, but for the HUGE price difference between them and the DX I would expect them to be 5 time as bright! (their not!)
.
.
.
Geordynige unfortunately most ppl like to complain more than they like to shout the praises of something. If you search this forum some one posted about their charger going up in flames, on the same thread is some-one saying there 'main stream' system also went up in flames. Apple & other computer manufacturer laptop battery issues are mentioned... is anything perfect?
.
I and many ppl on this forum and others have used the 'torches' since last year and can and do recommend them, the same now goes for their new bike system. No DealeXtreme are not totally perfect, as they aren't a specific bike light manyufacturer, but if the wait is anything to go by (normally it take 10 days for an order to be completed) the demand for them is huge, as some ppl can see a real bargain for what it is.

SKU12060 P7 torch user here, bought a year ago. No problems whatsoever, in constant use as bike light & torch for camping, DIY etc.
Had a problem with a 2-mode version, DX were very good & swapped it for the more expensive 5-mode as above. No problems with that either since.
I use one bar mounted & one helmet mounted.
DX do a helmet mount SKU12000 but best bar mount is the Fenix TwoFish LockBlock
Getting around 1hr 5min on full per 18650 Li-Ion Cell charged with this charger.

the torches dont come with any batteries or chargers, whereas the bike light does.

I have run a P7 torch on my helmet from last year and only drawbacks are short runtime on high and the 228g weight on my head. it's as bright as my old hope Hid lamp, and compliments the exposure maxx-d on my bars really well.

Thanks for all the replies folks, think I'm going to start with the Magicshine helmet mount but can anyone tell me the size of the O-Ring that comes with the bar mount version (oversized bars) 😆

My helmet mount is exactly the same in looks and performance as the bar mounts my pals have so don't read anything into the current figures on the DX site. I also have a Hope 4. It is not brighter than the DX. In fact you struggle to see its light when they are on together. It is more floody and has no hotspot so when used in isolation is probably a nicer light to ride with. I seldom ride with just one light and if you ride in a group the nice even light of the Hope is also negated by shadows and hotspots. If I had £250 to spend on lights just now I would get 5 DX lights.
