What is it like there as all I can find is it's a 9 mile loop? And is it one of those places where you really need some local knowledge ?

Cheers

The nine mile loop (on the south side of the A957 - TV Transmitter side) is a good fitness ride with some not too tough climbs and a nice long descent but nothing too technical just slightly rough landrover track.

On the other side there's a tougher climb (20 mins) up to the top where the mobile phone/radio masts are and a great singletrack descent from the cairn or you can backtrack down the fireroad at speed. There are a number of other routes along fire trail but nothing too exciting.

Swanley/Feteresso has more interesting singletrack as does Scoltie.

Here's a wildlife shot from Durris last Friday (apologies to those who've seen it already).

It's a huge area. Whether its any good depends on what your after. As mentioned there are few areas of singletrack, but there are also some great long distance routes including Kerloch, Drumtochty, Cairn-A-Mount, and the old drovers paths (mounths). A great area to explore... but not necessarily for rad singletrack.

Thanks for the info. I'm only visiting for a few days so sounds like it's worth a look. I've only ever done Scoltie on foot, so may well give that atry too as I've a mate who lives in Banchory.

Found this on the cyclegrampian site
"On offer is an 9 mile cycle trail round the 3 peaks of Cairn-mon-earn, Strathgyle and Mundernal with an optional spur to the top of Cairn-mon-earn. There is also a complex network of other forest roads and off-road MTB trails that provide some fine mountain biking for all tastes."

Trail_rat - originally from Aberdeen (Cults) but I've been away for a very long time now. I'm up fairly regulary as my parents are getting on a bit. I'll give you a shout next time and come and see your 'good work' - if you don't mind showing round an old fart that is LOL.

Forestry have removed all the markers so you will need to plan your own route and take map. Scolty is a cracking area... enjoy.
