Given up waiting for YT to reply. lol

The bearings drop straight into the carbon headtube. Not pressed in or anything. Should I just smear a bit of grease on the "cups" and on the bearings, just as I would on an alloy frame?

Or will that result in sudden death??

Using PT Polylube 1000 so no trouble on carbon.

Thanks for info guys!

I went no grease when dropping mine into a carbon cube frame. So I say grease yours and statistically one of us must die.

Damn it!

I was all set to grease up now you say you didn't! Lol

What was your reason for not using grease? Just not necessary?

Carbon and grease don't get along apparently. The grease could potentially cause the carbon to swell.

I've looked into that a lot actually. Grease and carbon.

Jeffsy themselves say they use the Park Tool grease on the bottom bracket.

Park Took also say the polylube 1000 is A-ok on carbon.

So....

I guess it just comes down to whether grease is actually necessary, rather than will it cause damage.

Didn't think it was necessary, they are fairly easy to knock out without damaging anything when I need to replace them and I thought a bit of friction would be beneficial if anything.

My carbon seatpost came with copper grease, so that's the only thing I've used in the frame

Ok mate, thanks for the info.

These bearings just drop in, you can lift out with your fingers.

All, btw breading here now (the lower as usual) but still not sure whether to apply grease.

Just bumping in case someone has a definitive answer.

YT still not replied.

I've greased the headset bearing seats on 2 stumpjumper frames I've had, and used for 2 years total, neither have had any issues. Both have been bearings straight into carbon headtube without alloy inserts.

My thinking in doing so was that I didn't want and annoying creaking or clicking if the bearings were to be be shifting ever so slightly.

Like I said, no problem in 2 years use. I used rock n roll red devil.

What part of "yes, definitely grease" is not definitive?

Okay then, any grease okay? or a particular kind of grease?

Just bumping this one last time. Lol

Bike gradually getting built up now and think I will use a bit of grease on the carbon bearing "seats" for want of a better word.

YT still not replied unfortunately. What's the worst that could happen? 😀

I've read many times that bike companies advise to use it where necessary. Grease and carbon seem to get along fine.

Yep, im figuring that I will treat the frame like an alloy one....for the headset anyway. 🙂

I would assume it will have an alloy or steel insert where the bearing fits. Should be no different then to any normal headset in grease use.

There's some question about copperslip type of grease and some materials, though thought that was more to do with seals. I wouldn't use copperslip for headset bearings anyway.

The grease that was suggested above would be a good start. Does anyone actually read all replies these days or just have selective reading? Also aimed at the OP!

Andyl.... I take your point. 😉

Just looking for that last bit of assurance. First carbon frame build you see.

Polylube duly applied so the build can continue.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Always appreciated as mentioned above. 🙂
