My Roadrat is set up 48/16 SS with BB7s and cane creek Drop levers. Ratio is good for commuting but a bit much for occasional off road pootling. Would like to fit a rear mech for just a bit of range, and better (less rattly) brakes would be nice... the BB7s are MTB pull so would need replacing anyway.

What are the cheap option s for Road 1x, ideally hydro? Sram Force is there but not at all cheap, almost 900 for a groupaet

Some useful bits and bobs, mix and and match as needed:
- TRP Hylex levers
- microSHIFT barend shifters (11/10 spd. MTN compatible)
- Gevenalle levers/shifter (long pull available, so you get to keep the MTN BB7s)

I want 1x11 for my cross bike but sram hydro is shockingly priced. Especially given the left lever doesnt even have any shifting gubbins!

hydro brifters aren't cheap no matter who makes them, but given Force is Ultegra-equivalent, have you looked further down the line?

Or Rival 1 and cable calipers

This was my cheap 1x9/drop bar/discs solution and it's still going strong, all in it cost me ~£40 and a couple of evenings bodging...

you could do the same thing 8x, 9x, friction or I believe it could work with a Sturmey Archer 3/5/8 speed internal hubs as SA use the same basic shifter...

But yeah proper Givenalle is probably better.

How about a bar end shifter (or cookeaa's solution above and some TRP Hylex brakes?

That way you're not tied into specific brifters and have much more flexibility.

Gevenalle also sell retrofitted Hylexes, but at 450$ they are hard to justify against 560€ for the whole Apex groupset ( https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=168488;menu=1000,4,26 ). The SRAM brifters are ugly, but hey, you can't have them all.

TRP Hylex, as suggested above, but with a £50 SRAM SL-500 'aero' shifter in the bar end and a £50 Apex 1 mech.

I sun the same place as you SSCX, BB7s, with a hankering for a few extra hardness choices.

I kept the brakes and levers, bought thick-thin ring SRAM TT500 10speed bar-end shifter and type 2 clutchy mech to match.

I've since built up a commuter 1x9. Dura Ace bar end shifter, old non clutch XT mech, thick/thing ring. No drops, on rough roads and plenty off road too, and the Dura-Ace shifting is much nicer.

CX racing, bar end shifters aren't great at all, you don't want to be moving your hands when your hauling on the bars up a hill or holding on for dear life on rough downhills.

For commuting, they're ideal, you can grab loads of gears at once, check your gear at the lights by the lever position rather than staring past your crotch as the lights change. And very reliable. Seen a few snapped gear cables on shimano brifters, when they fray inside the housing you end up with a barbed end you can't shift round and extract without wirecutters and patience.

I've got just the thing as mentioned above. 10 speed bar end shifter plus a trp hydro front brake. Not sure what it's worth?

Campag 10 speed ergos (not hydro though)
Sram x9 Mtb 10s clutch mech / type 2
10 speed cassette (sram or Shimano compatible)
Mechanical calipers of choice (spyre for me)

That's my cx setup and it works perfectly.
