Chunk taken out my leg on ride today.
'mut' chases me on bike, that a fairly regular occurrence as route shared by many doggy walkers, but on this occasion take a liking to my leg!!
Elderly female owner says "never done that before!!!" while apologising like mad", me ****@@&££ hell as I tend to the wound!! at least not too bad a wound.
I too am a dog owner, I am wondering how I Should react if it was my dog!! An should I have given it a big boot before being bitten!!
hope your ok!!! don't have any advice. just wanted to say, that i have wondered what to do,if a dog attacks you? when i ride on kennet and avon canal, there are plenty of people, who let their dogs run free!!! i find that it's always the smallest dogs that start chasing me,and barking.i am always worried about running them over. the owners seem to be oblivious to their dogs running around, and that gets my goat!!!i bet that if i accidentally ran the dog over, they would get in a rage with me!!!(i always go slow past people).
get the ****er tracked down and then put down.
And her stupid dog 😉
once had a mad collie used to see me coming then start running to hide in rushes & spring out at the opportune moment. Last time, I involuntarily growled "ah, go forth & multiply" in my loudest deep anger-tone, dog pulled up short & aint seen him since.
In short, let them think you're more of a dog than they are! & no resorting to violence unless totally necessary..
Get a water pistol but fill it with isopropyl alcohol.
3 in 1 uses - disables the dog, disables the irate owner and disinfects the wound.
I'm in a bad mood with dog owners after I had to pick up 4 or 5 poos from my front garden whilst mowing the lawn. If I ever see the culprit, they will be eating it.
On Friday when riding on my own, I had a Red Setter run up to me and then jump at me, putting its paws on my torso. Owner called it, it went back to owner, I started riding again and it came after me then jumped up again. At this point I adopted a deep voice and gave it the "down" command by raising and lowering my arm.
Owner would not even look at me and went off whereupon I said "an apology would have been nice" - dead silence. Of course the fact that I was wearing a jersey adorned with large skull and crossbones probably didn't help 🙂
As a matter of interest, if my clothing was torn by a dog (think Goretex jacket or anything really), what's the best way to deal with it?

Duct tape?
😉
A dogs owner is responsible for any damage it causes. A dog that jumps up at you is out of control and the owner is breaking the law.
Should the owner not be liable? After all, if you have dog insurance you have public liability cover.
In this case, the dog's paws were on my torso and some dogs can have very long nails. Just curious as to whether anyone has experienced such a situation.
I've got every sympathy for the OP. Never had one, but dog bites can't be nice. The owner should have a) had the dog under control on noticing you approach or b) been quick-witted enough to call it off when it gave chase.
But... in the dog's defence, many dog breeds (collies for example) are hard-wired to chase and nip fleeing mammals, whether they're deer or bikers. The faster you go, the more its instincts take over. It is up to the owner to be able to override this instinctive reaction. Personally, I would never kick the dog nor would I try out-running the dog. What works for me is to stop, let the dog approach, let it check me out and then, in every instance I've been chased (apart from once in India, which was more of a rabid dogpack attack), we each go our merry way. This satisfies the dog's curiosity and you stop being prey.
Loads of people on here seem paranoid about dogs !!!!! But the OP has actually been bitten wich is quite different. Only two choices realy, just shrug it of and lick your wounds or report it to the police. I've never been bitten and wouldn't tolerate my own dog bitting me, let alone someone elses.
p.s
If it was coming in at you, and you thought it was going to bite you a big kick would be well in order.
I had one bite my shoe a few years ago as it ran past, it ran ahead, then turned around and came back towards me for a better shot. A well directed kick in the head saw it right. Shame it wasn't the owner really. It's probably not done it again though.
Paranoid about dogs - well no, plenty of times dogs give chase but usually give up after a short distance or after a loud shout from their owner. Small dogs are the worst. First time I have been had a 'nip', and I had slowed to allow the owner to catch up and the dog to react to the owners shouts, If I had thought is was about to bite, a swift shove with the boot would have been in order, or even a quick dismount and grab the thing by the collar and return it to the owner with some stiff words. (not to be tried with large dogs though!!)
