Does Deore 11 speed m5100 rear mech work with a m8000 shifter?

Anyone try the combination before?

Trying to fit new m5100 11-51t cassette and rear mech to an existing 11 speed xt shifter, and it doesn't seem to work for me.

Any Shimano 11 speed MTB derailleur should work with any Shimano 11 speed MTB shifter.

That's what I thought too. It's very wired that it can shifts to 51t with a 6/7th gear, with the 11t working fine at the 1st gear. Probably something not setup right.

Have a slx shifter on old bike, maybe swap it over to see if that's the same.

Big cassettes really show up a misaligned mech hanger.

Could be issue with the hanger, though it's only replaced a couple weeks ago.

Replaced doesn't necessarily mean straight. I get the mech alignment tool out every time I work on a big cassette now.

Like everyone who's bought a hanger alignment tool, I was amazed by how far out of alignment even brand new hangers can be.

I've had to straighten the B link on a Shimano mech before now.

Also check the cable is routed correctly.

Thanks all.

It turned out to the shifter. I put the SLX shift from the other bike over and then it started to work fine. Maybe the XT shifter is a bit too old to hold the tension (which feel a bit stronger on the m5100, but could be just a new rear mech)? Not sure exactly, but at least have one that works, so will have some biking tomorrow, happy day.

If you're looking to replace that shifter, Wiggle currently selling XT M8000 ispec b shifters for £15 - can swap over top covers if you don't use ispec b.

Just in case that anyone happens to have the same problem, fpfilko asked me to re-post what he/she has found to be culprit:

"I had exactly the same issue, then I realized I have attached the cable wrongly (endpoint into the cassette, not outwards), it caused different pull ratio and broke the shifting on low gears, highest 4-5 gears shifts normally, then skips over 2 and at 7 clicks on the largest cog. After rerouting the cable it works perfectly. "

Yet again I have made this error and spent this morning grinding round a couple of laps at Bedgebury.

I have made this mistake with both NX and 5100 mechs and it seems to be a very common error.

In the unlikely event that anyone from SRAM or Shimano user testing is reading this, a mark on the rear mech cable insertion point would be really groovy.
