Today I noticed on my online banking a transaction I didn't recognise, £99.99 taken 19th Jan with the merchant listed as 'Sagepay.com' followed by an 020 telephone number.
Checked my email thinking I must've forgot I'd ordered something, but no order confirmation to be seen. Googled the phone number and https://www.elavon.co.uk/ comes up who appears to be another payment provider.
Called the 020 number and a bloke answers, I ask who I'm speaking to and he just says "Madison, cycling business".
Googled Madison to verify the phone number but they have an 01908 number listed on their website. I then checked Freewheel's website and as it happens they have the same telephone number apart from the last two digits.
Flagged the transaction as potential fraud with my bank, who confirmed the time of the transaction and as it happens I was actually in a job interview at the time! They also had the merchant category as 'Bicycle Shops - Sales & Service'.
What do we think's happened here then?!
Disgruntled bike shop employee goes rogue and charges card details on file maybe!? Or maybe my card's been cloned and someone's used it to pay for part of a posh bike?
Either way, check your bank account!
Who knows how they do it.
I had a fraudulent transaction last year, I was in work (2am) and a £50 payment alert pinged up on my phone for 5 guys.
The card cloned/used for payment was brand new I hadn't used it anywhere.
NatWest refunded the money didn't hear anymore about it
