I own a large pre-CEN Soul frame. I'm trying to work out what' the minimum steerer length i need for a new set of forks - I'm buying 2nd hand, so nearly every pair's been cut down to some degree, but what's the minimum length I need to look for?
I'm a mechanical idiot, so I can't work these things out for myself. If this doesn't mean the Cotic Owners Mafia coming round and working me over, what's the answer please?
Thanks
The headtube length is 120mm on my large Mk1 Soul. You will need to add on the "stack height" of your headset, depth of stem clamp and the number of spacers to arrive at the steerer length.
I've got a 6 year old large Soul.
The steerer on an old set of forks I've got kicking about the garage measures 196mm. I think that was "spacerless".

Edit These were fitted using a Hope headset and a Thomson Elite stem.
Thanks Big John.
So that's a measure from the top of the stem to the bottom of the headtube? I'm presuming I can lose some of those spacers if needed...?
No, Tim, you'll need to add the height of the stem and the headset, which'll come to about 196mm.
cheers all - sounds like the pair I had in mind aren't going to work - they're 184mm steerer.
No and maybe. I misunderstood your initial comment about mechanical idiot.
The headtube is a bit of the frame. 120mm. Headset will add about 32mm, stem about 44mm. That takes you to 196m spacerless.
Maybe you will want some spacers to get your riding position right.
In that you didn't know how much of an idiot I really was? ๐ I try to make it as clear as I can, but bikeshop staff are still regularly astounded.
Yup. The 20 minutes you spent working out how to write "mechanical" weren't really worth it, were they? 8)
Think along the lines of
Headtube = 120mm
Headset Cups = 30-32mm (this is sometimes called stack hight) regular ones are about 15mm high bottom, 18mm top side
Stem hight = 40mm (this is a common ish size)
