I've just built a 29er and am using the 36/22 double and 11-34t 9spd cassette off the 26er. Not a massive problem, but I am (as to be predicted) noticeably using the top half of the cassette a lot more than previously.
Both chainrings are shot, so I'm going to replace (cassette and chain are one ride old - last of the 9spd spares).
To get a similar set-up to the 26er, I'm thinking of dropping the chainrings to 20/32 or 20/34.
Any thoughts on this? Anyone done it? Or what are you running on your 29er?
1x10, running 30 x 11-36
On a double, I'd keep the 22T inner (and man up) but swap to a 30 or 32 outer and you'll use more of the cassette for most riding, with the granny for the hills.
Small and tight vs big and loose?
I'm running 24/38 front and 11-36 rear on my FS and 32t front with 11-36t rear on the HT.
You'd have to be careful with clearance getting a 20t on the front, although it can probably be done.

Ran out of letters in the title. 😳

That was a concern, hence this post.

Theotherjonv, do you find you're spinning out at all in 30/11?
30/11 x pi x 29 x 120rpm = 28mph or thereabouts.
So yes, on a road descent it is perfectly possible to hit 'terminal velocity'. On trails - yes, but by the time I hit 20mph on vaguely techie trails I'm usually hanging on for dear life and wgaf about pedalling.
I'm running 1x10, 30t x 11-36 cassette with a 40t General Lee adapter fitted. This set up is working nicely for the majority of my riding. On a 9sp set-up, and if I was still running a double up front, I'd probably be using 22/32 rings.
Thanks both (and apologies Steve_b77 - just reread my answer to your post. It certainly wasn't meant to sound rude!)
32 it is. Fortunately I think I have a nearly-new spare, which is nice. 🙂
I'm struggling with this question, but from my thread and other stuff I've read, most ppl are suggestion I should be run a dual ring 24/36 setup. I still wonder if the 36 won't be little tall, as my current single ring set is a 32x11-36, and I don't find the lack of top end gearing to be a huge issue.
I've certainly found it quite tall. I live on the Isle of Wight which certainly isn't mountainous but is quite lumpy, and I've found myself struggling more on the steeper stuff while not really getting into the lower half of the cassette in the bigger ring.
Personally I'd always rather have lower gears to climb with - you can always freewheel downhill.

MTFU, ditch them all and singlespeed 😉
Of your options, the smaller chainring will increase your clearance, which is always nice 🙂
1x10 32 front 11-36 rear 29er.
My stumpy evo is currently running a 33 tooth big ring, not sure what the granny is. I'll be dropping to a single 30 front soon tho, 10 speed cassette. Plenty in south Shropshire / FOD.

😆 Heh! That's what my singlespeed is for... (which it looks like I'll be getting out soon if this rain doesn't stop)
For the record, 32 worked nicely at the weekend over a mix of wet and dry, fast and techy trails.
No fireroad descents though, so can't comment on spinning out. But who wants to descend down fireroads anyway?
Hope the op dont mind me asking here saves starting a new thread.
Im currently building a 29er XC bike and going 1x10......On my 26er enduro i run 34 front with a 11/36 out back and its fine all the riding i do. Only running out of gears on roads.
I was going for the same gearing on the 29er. Am i best to stick with the 34 front, down to a 32 or switch up to a 36 being a 29er 😕
Thankyou
Don't go up to a 36 - the wheel size makes a 10% difference already (10% 'harder'). I'd say go to a 32 front if you find 34 to be right on a 26er
running 32t front and 11-36t rear
would like sram 11 speed (have ridden it off road on 3 different 29'ers)but funds do not permit...

Not at all. 🙂
My experience so far (pretty much documented above) concurs with theotherjonv and esher shore. 1 x 11 sounds ace, but in the meantime 1 x 10 running either a 30 or 32 front chainring is probably the way forward.
I'm 1x10 on a 29er hardtail, running a 34t thick/thin ring on the front and an 11-36 on the back. I've not had trouble getting up anything yet.
I rode the same bike singlespeed as 32x18 for the first nine months I owned it and (coming from a 32:16 26 hardtail and a 2x9 fs) found it a little too spinny on the flatter stuff and downhills - basically, the bike rolled a lot quicker. Going 1x10 made sense. I'd probably go with the same gearing I had for the FS bike, because it's dead cheap - you basically buy Deore trekking rings in 26, 36, and you're good. Total outlay of about £20, assuming you have single chainring bolts t spare.
