Do Mavic rims still...

[Closed] Do Mavic rims still break at the eyelets ?

Big problems with this 10 years ago so I started using other brands. Is this still a issue ? CR got some 317s which look convincing (I want a 36hole with a rim brake, so choice limited). I'll be building myself.

Application is for a rear on a tourer so will have a narrow tyre with high pressure, which is what the old Mavics didn't used to like.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

Ive had Mavic rims for years and years, I didnt know this was an issue. Im fat and ride like a badly trained elephant and never had a problem with mine. I did use there top of the range ones though.

I've only had Mavic rims since I started mtb'ing 5 years ago and I've had a very old 2nd hand silver D521 split at an eyelet but other than that they're spot on.

Great rims. There were a few many years back, 231 if I remember, that were just a bit too light and ridden by some people they didn't best suit. Most of the issues I saw were peole running narrow tyres at high pressure on a rim that wasn't designed for that. I was guilty of that myself.

Although I exclusively use NoTubes rims now, I can't fault Mavic rims.

There's signs of this happening (hairline cracks at a couple of eyelets) on my 717's which I think are circa 2003/2004.

I've fitted the wheels to my girlfriends bike as a precaution

I had a problem with a pair of Mavic D521 about the same time period as the OP mentioned

the cause was a worn rim die tool in the Mavic factory

I was told (by Mavic) that the worn tool meant the rim extrusion was slightly oversize, and when they fitted the eyelets there was a lot of stress concentrated in the eyelet drillings

on both my rims (built properly by cycle surgery in London) the rims started cracking around all of the eyelets, I was offered some Sun rims as an alternative at no cost and did not use Mavic for many years after that

however, as a professional mechanic I have since built many pairs of wheels using Mavic rims for road, CX, and mountain biking including XC, FR and DH and no problems to report for either my customers or myself

I current use Mavic A319 rims on my commuting bike which gets beaten through potholes, drain covers and kerbs and the rims are just fine ๐Ÿ˜‰

To be fair the Mavic warranty is covering it.

I use xm317's with rim brakes and 80-100psi for commuter. No problem with eyelets on 4 rims so far. No wear indicators, so I ran the first pair until they started to bend outwards as the high pressures overcame the very high wear on the braking surface. I replaced both ends with 2 more xm317's and they are also fine so far. No idea of mileage but lots of stop-start, a massive hill to drag brakes down and also fair bit of dirt on my commute, so probably not relevant anyway. (Also built a disc pair into very tightly-tensioned wheels for a mate's very hard-ridden hustler, they are also doing fine after a year FWIW)

Haha, great minds think alike! I did exactly the same thing with a rear 717 from that sort of era, eyelets pulling right out the rim in places. Have ridden plenty of other Mavic rims though with no problem.

Seen a couple of 721s do it. Then I have seen an awful lot of 721s. Mechanic mate of mine reckons the rims are slightly stressed when they fit the eyelets which over time becomes a failure point, no idea if that's right or not.

Definately not a major issue though.

I had a Mavic 717 Rim Brake wheel that finally expired, but not from a single point of failure.
The Hope hub had 2 worn bearings.
The rim had lost over 60g of metal by brake erosion and was on the safety marker (hole in rim).
I know it weighed under 350g when scrapped.
The rim was also found to have 8 eyelet holes cracking radially in both directions, each over 10mm long.
Decided not to rebuild the hub as it was not IS-disc, so scrapped the lot.
It had done approx 7 years of hard use.

Would I buy more Hope and Mavic.....yes I have.
